Masters 2010 – The Final Round: Back by popular demand

Masters

I didn’t know what I was starting when I made that initial contact with Horizon & Co three years ago. I was just trying to come up with the “best Christmas present-ever” for my husband. After my finishing my phone call with Andrew White, I realized that this was an experience worth sharing. In 2007, I escorted 110 people to the Masters. The trip was unbelievable. Our enthusiasm for the event carried over to Masters 2008 and 2009, as word-of-mouth endorsements enticed more of our clients to take this adventure.

We’re offering it again for 2010. If the Masters is one of your dreams, I encourage you to take advantage of this offer. It is absolutely wonderful, from start to finish.

There really are no words to describe walking along the fairways at Augusta National, watching players like Mike Weir, Fred Couples and Tiger Woods. And to be there for the final round is almost unimaginable! I will never forget it!

Yes the weather was cool - in fact one day during our trip was the coldest in 125 years! But it wasn't raining and the winds were well behaved. It was chilly but sunny and we were all smiling. Nothing was going to ruin this day for us!

Masters

It started with an early morning coach ride from Atlanta to Augusta where we chatted, dozed, or watched footage of Masters gone by. About 20 minutes out, we received a police escort to help us push through traffic. Registration and breakfast were waiting in our hospitality room where we received our very own chair for the event. As I watched the speed with which people consumed their breakfast, I could see the excitement was building.

Then off to Augusta. We were proudly wearing our Patrons' badges as we approached security. Once through the gates, we were free - free to explore this majestic place! The emotions run high when you see Augusta for the first time. It's all so familiar yet so different. The fairways are perfect - no divots, no brown grass. The undulations of the greens are impossible for the lay golfer. The azaleas are fantastic!

When you watch The Masters, you can set your chair at your favorite hole and then walk away. No one will sit on it. There is a civility at this event that you don't often find. Some choose to watch every player on a particular hole and others, like me, walk alongside players that they admire. I chose Mike Weir for a few holes and then on to Fred Couples. I even followed Tiger and got a close up glimpse of what focus really looks like. We parked our chairs at the par-3, number 16 hole and watched players make shots that spun, checked, and circled. The first player would hit within 3 feet and his playing partner would end up 2 feet away. It is so amazing to watch that level of talent.

Masters

And before we knew it, the final groups were approaching. We could hear the roar of Tiger's Eagle but the leader board was telling us that even he couldn't claw his way back. And then we watched Zach Johnson approach number 16 green. We watched him line up his pressure putt and pump his fist when the ball went in for his birdie. We could sense the activity in his stomach and the dryness of his mouth. He was on his way to winning the Masters - if he could just hold it together.

You can't write the finish to this event. The course creates it. You can only say, "I was there and I saw it." And that is a memory of a lifetime!

Secure Flight Overview
Effective June 1

TSA

Secure Flight is a program developed by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in response to a key 9/11 Commission recommendation: uniform watch list matching by TSA. The mission of the Secure Flight program is to enhance the security of domestic and international commercial air travel through the use of improved watch list matching. Secure Flight affects all travellers as planes that fly over US airspace must adhere to the rules even if the plane doesn't touch down on US soil.

As a result, you will now need to provide your FIRST, MIDDLE AND LAST names to us so that we can ensure they are on your travel documents. While it is not mandatory for us to collect this information the absence of the information could result in delays at the airport as the airlines attempt to gather it from you.

Secure Flight is now operational and implementation of the program is underway.

West Jet

WestJet & Southwest Delay Code-Share Implementation

WestJet has announced that Southwest's progress on the implementation of the code-share program will be delayed. With the
recessionary revenue environment, Southwest has decided to re-direct a portion of its resources dedicated to the code-share
project towards other near-term revenue opportunities.

"WestJet understands the decision made by Southwest. Our continued US expansion is a key strategy for our airline, but
code-sharing is only one element of this. Both

airlines remain committed to minimizing delays and are focused on generating revenue as quickly as possible," stated Dr. Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet's Executive Vice-President Commercial Distribution. "We have already implemented our distribution agreement and are close to starting a cargo program with Southwest."

"In response to the current economic environment, Southwest is focusing its immediate attention on several critical objectives, including increasing our revenues," said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airline's Executive Vice-President, Strategy and Planning. "While
I am very excited about working to deliver new incremental revenue opportunities for 2009, it will have an impact on our timing for
code-share delivery. We remain absolutely committed to our partnership with WestJet, and to code-sharing in general, and will do
all we can to minimize the impact on our previously stated code-share plans."

WestJet adds new routes: This month WestJet added flights to Sydney, NS, Deer Lake, St. John and New York . In June, you'll also be able to fly to San Diego and San Francisco on a WestJet plane. Alas - from Regina you'll still have to travel via Calgary or Toronto, but at least you can go somewhere new.

Delta News

Delta

As part of Delta's merger with Northwest, we are combining networks and fleets. Part of this effort includes utilizing Delta aircraft on a few select Northwest routes, and vice-versa. This 'cross-fleeting' gives Delta the flexibility to optimize routes and offer customers the most convenient connections to most destinations around the globe. Cross-fleeted flights began in April 2009.

When travelling with either Delta or Northwest, customers can check in with either carrier as the websites and kiosks can serve either airline. In many airports, Delta and Northwest have consolidated their ticket counters. Eventually the branding will reflect Delta only, but until that time, please pay close attention to your documents to ensure that you don't run into any problems.

As always WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO READ YOUR E-TICKETS AND DOCUMENTATION CAREFULLY, AND IN ADVANCE OF YOUR TRIP.

United Airlines

United Airlines is starting two direct flights per day from Regina to Denver, effective July 2nd. It makes great connections to places like Palm Springs, Phoenix, SanDiego etc and will add a lot of availability and options to your travel plans. Many travellers aren't aware of this relationship, so if you're thinking about travelling with Aeroplan - your world just got a little bigger.

Our Clients Share
Epicurean Journey: Morocco
(Designed by Horizon & Co)

Roberta and Elmer McKay travelled to Morocco last winter arranged by one of our pre-eminent suppliers, Horizon & Co. Roberta took the time to share her impressions on this fantastic trip.
Morocco
We had a wonderful time in Morocco. We had a guide and a driver who picked us up at the airport and looked after us until our departure. Our guide spoke English very well and was exceedingly knowledgeable. It was particularly nice to be with someone from the country when we were in the souks as people did not hassle us to buy things. It was very clear that the two gentlemen who looked after us wanted us to leave Morocco with good impressions of our visit. The lady from the Moroccan company which had organized our tour also kept in touch with our guide and spoke to us to make sure everything was going well.

The accommodations were superb. The property in Marrakech was extensive. The main building had about ten rooms with fireplaces. There were three large buildings, each with a swimming pool, which were rented to large family groups. Then there was the owner’s home. The owners invited all the guests from the main building to cocktails one night. After the meal we mixed and mingled so it was like a large family affair.

Morocco

Our cooking lesson was conducted in the owner’s kitchen, which was huge. We learned to make two different tagines – very flavourful and aromatic stews – and later we purchased a tagine cooking dish. The dish has a round fairly deep bottom and a conical top, which allows evaporating moisture to be redirected down to keep the ingredients very moist.

The hotel in Essaouira was also wonderful but more formal. The day we arrived we were informed that our cooking class could not be honoured as the chef was too busy preparing for New Years. We discussed this with the hotel manager and he agreed to pay for our wine during our stay in lieu of the trip to the market with the chef and our cooking lesson. We were happy with that. The New Years celebration was wonderful with a seven course dinner, lots of entertainment and dancing.

We saw many sights in the cities and in the countryside. One of the more amusing sights was in a grove of argan trees. These trees are very gnarled and their fruit is a nut that is ground into an oil. If the nut is toasted first it becomes salad oil. Nuts that are not toasted, yield oil that is used in cosmetic creams which are purported to have many amazing qualities – fountain of youth kind of things. There is a small breed of goat, which climbs up in the argan trees to eat the fruit and the leaves. We saw one tree that had atleast five goats on the branches. Of course the tourist attraction is to have your picture taken by a tree with the goat in it. The goatherd wants to take the picture so he can get a tip. We do not travel with a camera so the young boy who was tending the

Argana tree

goats was disappointed but we gave him a tip anyway. Our guide said that some goatherds will tie a goat in a tree so there is always a photo op when a tourist happens by.

There is another tree, which grows in Morocco called a thuya tree. This tree yields beautiful patterned wood, which is fashioned into all kinds of furniture and a wide variety of trinkets, picture frames, boxes, etc. These pieces are often inlaid with ebony and citron wood. A piece we purchased has a carving representing the hand of Fatima. Fatima was a religious woman from Kairouan, Tunisia who had come to Morocco with many Kairouan refugees and settled in Fez. Fatima donated her worldly riches for the construction of a mosque in Fez in 869 B.C. This mosque became the first university in Fez. The people of Morocco believe that the hand of Fatima with its glass eye in the centre will protect you from evil. People hang a hand at the door to their home to protect them from evil.

Our one frustration was the credit card use or non-use. Here are some examples. When leaving the hotel in Marrakech, we owed 770 dirhams($120.00) and we presented our credit card. The lady asked for cash; they only use the credit card for amounts over 1000 dirhams. The same thing happened at restaurants and at the thuya wood vendor but the threshold amount for using the credit varied. By the end of the trip we would ask in advance if we could use VISA; at one restaurant they said yes, but when it came time to pay they said their VISA machine was not working. Thank heavens we had a guide who knew where we could exchange our Euros and American dollars and where there were banking machines so we could get more cash. We were very happy that most of our trip was prepaid.

Out time in Barcelona was short but we enjoyed the city. Hotel Neri was delightful and had a great restaurant. The hotel was not located down the street from the Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral as I had thought but that was fine. We were about twenty minutes by cab from the cathedral, which is an absolutely fascinating architectural work. It was drizzling and the line up to go inside was long, so we decided to pass on that this time. We walked back to out hotel, which was fun because we saw a lot of other interesting sights and got some exercise in the bargain. The prearranged cars to and from the airport worked well.

From Lorna: Hawai'i

I don’t think anyone can argue that the Winter 2009 was harsh. Fortunately, I was able to escape to paradise for a few days in January - Hawai'i!

I spent my time in Honolulu. It offers the best of both worlds: a relaxing ocean resort and a bustling city with fabulous restaurants and shopping.

Most of my time was spent on a small beach near Waikiki Beach, where the locals take their families and surf throughout the day. My favourite was Willows Beach which was on the other side of the island. It was absolutely breathtaking, with waves crashing on the sand against brilliant blue skies.

Chinese New Year is celebrated with in a big way in Hawaii, and we were lucky enough to spend the evening in downtown Honolulu at a restaurant called Indigo. The entire street was closed for the celebration and there were many decorative dragons and lions dancing right outside the restaurant. It wasn’t long before they came into the restaurant and

Hawaii

performed for us. The Year of the Ox was brought in with lots of fanfare.

Honolulu is a shoppers dream, from bargain stores to high end fashion, they have it all. All along Waikiki Beach, there are endless designer stores and great restaurants.

While winter may seem impossible to imagine, you know it will land with a bang. Be prepared and let us help you find the perfect Hawai'ian vacation. Contact me or Melissa if you want to explore sitting on a beach, in the sun, with the waves, and the surfers, and the flowers, and the warmth, eating macadamias, and smiling.

ALOHA!

Oberammergau 2010
It only happens once a decade

Oberammergau

Imagine, if you will, a small alpine village in Bavaria, Germany where once each decade the villagers come together to put on a play, performed repeatedly over the course of five months.

First created in 1634, the Oberammergau Passion Play is a result of a vow made to God long ago. The villagers prayed to be spared from the ravages of the bubonic plague; in exchange - they would put on the Passion Play once every 10 years.

The play, depicting the life and death of Jesus, is now performed in the years ending in zero, except in 1984 which marked the 350th anniversary. It involves over 2,000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians - all residents of the village.

In 2010, the work will premiere on Saturday, May 15 and will be staged for a total of 102 days. 2010 also marks a change in presentation.

The Oberammergau play runs for about 7 hours. For the first time, the performance will begin in the afternoon and the second part will be performed in the evening. The first part begins at 2:30 pm and ends at 5:00 pm; part two begins at 8:00 pm and ends at 10:30 pm. The seating can hold up to 4,700 people.

Now that is human spirit propelled by divine intervention!

There are many ways to make your way to this very unusual and reverential event. We have possibilities for all styles of travel and for all accommodation types.
Tickets to this once in a lifetime event sell out very quickly.

Traditional Grandmothers:
Doing so much with so little

While listening to an early morning radio program a couple of months ago, Rita heard an interview that touched her heart. Beatrice, a First Nations woman from North Central Regina, was speaking about her responsibility to her neighbourhood. She talked about how distressed she was when Tamra Keepness disappeared and how troubled she was over the increase in crime and gang related violence. Beatrice is a grandmother, and traditionally grandmothers are the guardians of the young. But as she looked throughout her neigbourhood she wondered, "Where are all the grandmothers? "

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.
- Anne Frank

About a year ago, Beatrice started Traditional Grandmothers's Guidance Centre Inc., an organization that trains and encourages Grandmothers to become active in their community while offering grandmotherly support to the children and young people of the neighbourhood. Its programmes include Cree language classes, sharing-sewing circles, healing through beading, recovery circles, and sacred teachings. Once a week, on Fridays, soup and bannock are served from the small Centre at lunch time. Usually 80 people come to have a bowl of Kokum 's soup and delicious bannock. The Centre doesn't have a stove, so it's cooked at Beatrice's home and brought to the centre for serving.

This is a remarkable story of one person believing she can make a difference. Beatrice has gathered a group of women to become leaders in their community, and with very few resources, they are all working hard to mentor and guide the young people that so desperately need positive role models. The Centre is housed in one side of a commercial
building on 5th Avenue. Thanks to the generosity of the landlord it was rent free for

a while, but that arrangement ended at the end of April. A small programming grant ran out at the end of March. Beatrice, Lea, and the other women of the Centre, contribute from their own personal resources to make sure things still happen. Beatrice and Lea often provide gas for the vehicles that take a group of women to Fort Qu'Appelle once a week; they go there to work on their personal healing. Beatrice says that a grandmother must heal herself before she helps others. Beatrice provides the food for the soup and bannock meal each Friday. Others contribute supplies for the programs. Through our visit to the Centre, we heard the passion and the commitment and the dreams of the possibilities. We know that there is something very special happening here, and it needs support and help. We're asking you to join us in helping them out.

Traditional Grandmothers' Guidance Centre Inc is an incorporated non-profit organization, but it doesn't have official charitable status. You won't receive a tax receipt, but you'll be making a difference - a real difference in lives from every generation. Sometimes you just need to help when help is needed, regardless of what you will receive in return . Will they change the world? I'm not sure. I can only tell you that they have changed mine.

Should you wish to contribute, you can make a cheque payable to Traditional Grandmothers' Guidance Centre Inc. The Travel Gallery will collect them and make sure that Beatrice and her organization receives the contribution. Please mail your payment to:
