Leadership By Example Recognition Update

Where has the time gone?  In the last month we have heard so many members remark on how busy they are with bookings.  CITC can relate.  Our last month has taken us from the Addison Shows in Saskatoon and Regina to the SITV Show in Montreal to the Travel & Leisure Show in Toronto, then back to Montreal for the ASTA World Congress and back to Toronto for Travel Law Day. Five days later we held our 10th Annual Student Conference.  While we are grateful that this hectic pace does not occur in every 6 week period, it did give us an excellent chance to meet many CITC members, promote certification, speak with consumers, and talk about

ASTA World Congress:

Coralie Belman, National Certification Manager and Steve Gillick CTM, President

professional development to the industry at large.  While I was preparing for a presentation on "Putting Enthusiasm back into Travel" at ASTA, Coralie was meeting with members and suppliers about opportunities for next year, as well as attending seminars to gather ideas--and contacts--for our own educational programs.

On November 15th, 325 students enrolled in travel programs descended on The Old Mill for our annual conference.  You can read the details below, but we are very happy that the Tourism Authority of Thailand and My Travel, Holiday House and Sunquest served as major Conference Sponsors.  Of course, all of our programs are supported by those Corporate Partners listed on the footer of this newsletter.  Please take a minute to click on their logos to learn more about how they support education in the industry and what they can do for you.

Our last "event" of the year is the December 8th teleseminar with our friend Marc Mancini who will talk about "Learning from Las Vegas".  If you have never considered attending a tele-seminar, please read about this one (below) and set aside one hour of your time.  Who knows...you might get hooked on these insightful seminars!  The 2006 program will be announced early in the New Year.

Our last Update of the year will appear on the 12th of December and will list all the new CTCs and CTMs, as well as provide information about Regional Council elections and the 2006 Annual General Meeting. That's only three weeks away!

Sincerely,

Steve Gillick CTM

Salutations,

Steve Gillick, CTM

PLEASE RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN CITC

All renewals were mailed on Monday November 21st.  As we have done in previous years, we were able to offer an Early Bird Renewal period which will extend to January 6, 2006.  Over 75% of our members take advantage of this so please consider sending in your renewal as soon as you are able.  There are four convenient ways to renew:

1
Click on www.citc.ca/en/renewal

2
Visit www.citc.ca--go to the Member Services link and then click on "Renewal"

3
Mail the renewal invoice along with a cheque

4
Call the CITC office and we can renew your membership over the phone with a credit card

Two often-asked questions about renewal:

Q)  I am a Full member (CTC or CTM).  I will be retiring this year / taking time off for maternity leave/taking a leave of absence but wish to retain the designation. What should I do?

A)  CITC has a Retired/Inactive category for members who are temporarily not using the designation--but wish to retain it.  These members should indicate their situation on the renewal form and may pay the RM rate of $70.00 (before Jan 6/06) or $75.00 after Jan 6/06.  GST is extra.

Q) I am a student who will graduate from my travel program at year end.  Now what?

A) Students are urged to maintain the momentum of their career by renewing as an Affiliate member, registering for the Certification Program and start collecting the education credits and experience required for the CTC designation.  CITC offers a first year introductory rate for Student members who are renewing in the Affiliate category, of $50.00 (+ GST).

Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about your continued membership in CITC.  Ruby, Hilary or Steve will be happy to speak with you.

Airliners (including ATOURZ and Interliners) will once again be sponsoring our renewal mailer--and we are very grateful for their support.  The receipt from your renewal will be mailed in a special envelope, along with a message from our Sponsor.

Just a reminder that if you participated in the 2005 Airliners Membership Rewards program, please advise us of credits you are applying to your 2006 membership dues. Airliners has agreed to extend the program in 2006 to allow members to acquire their 2007 CITC membership for free.

Visit Membership Services--Members Only-Membership Rewards for details. Just type in your membership number to access this exclusive section of the website .

1
Cliquez sur le lien www.citc.ca/fr/renouvellement

2

Visitez notre site Web www.citc.ca.

SASKATCHEWAN REPORT

Steve had the pleasure of visiting Saskatoon and Regina for the first time, on October 23-27.  He addressed the students at Universal Career College in Saskatoon, made an appearance on Jeff Rogstad's noon hour TV show, met with the Saskatoon Regional Council, conducted some business meetings, attended the ACTA Forums and the Addison Shows in both cities.  He even had a chance to buy a Huskies T-shirt (sorry, Regina) during a break on the last day in Saskatoon.

SITV IN MONTREAL

Hilary Krupa, CITC's Events Coordinator participated in the Salon International Tourisme Voyage (International Tourism & Travel Show) at the Place
Bonaventure in Montreal October 28 - 30. CITC teamed up with ACTA to deliver a joint message of the importance of professional training in
the industry as well as the benefits and services that trained travel professionals offer to travellers.  This was CITC's first year attending the Show and so far, feedback from Quebec agents and consumers on  seeing CITC participate, has been very encouraging.

TRAVEL LAW DAY AND TICO MINIMUM STANDARDS

Baxter Publications and Heifetz, Crozier, Law held the annual Travel Law Day on November 10 at Ryerson University. CITC's contribution to the day was threefold: We supported the educational value of the event by providing 6 Management Level Credits for attendance; we distributed information about the Certification Program and particularly the CTM program, and Steve Gillick gave an update in the afternoon on the TICOMinimum Education Standards Study Manual and Exam.

CITC and TICO are on track to have the Study Manual available to Ontario Registrants by the beginning of the New Year.  The first exams will take place toward the end of January, 2006, with the French Study Manual and Exam available in February.  During the presentation Steve addressed some of the "myths" about the program:

Myth #1  TICO Minimum Standards "certification" has nothing to do with CITC's Advanced Level (CTC) or Managerial (CTM) Certification programs.  CITC is objectively administering the TICO Minimum Standards course and exam (just like they do for the BC Insurance study manual and Exam).

Myth #2  The study manual and exam are based solely on the Travel Industry Act, 2002 and Regulations. There is no basic information about the travel industry included on the exam. This is information that is taught in travel programs throughout the province. TICO is only concerned with how well sellers of travel understand their obligations toward consumers, under the Act and Regulations. (In other words, no one will be required to name and spell the capital of Burkina Faso)!

Myth #3 There is no grandfathering for the Minimum Standards exam.  In other words, every person who deals with the public on behalf of an Ontario registrant, must pass the exam.

An FAQ about the program can be found on the CITC website. Full details about registering for the manual and exam will be posted in the next few weeks, followed by a Press Release.

CITC's final teleseminar of the 2005 season...

LEARNING FROM LAS VEGAS, December 8th at 2:00 pm Eastern Time

Audience: Travel Counsellors, Trainers, Managers, Owners, Suppliers

Las Vegas is a remarkable success story and one which contains bold marketing insights that every sector of the travel industry can learn from. In this offbeat teleseminar, you'll discover what volcanoes, a virtual Venice and an all-suite hotel can teach you about some of the cleverest sales and marketing on the planet--all tactics you too can apply to your own business. You'll learn how to:

Position your business to set yourself apart from the competition
Use "personality marketing" to enhance your image and sales
Bring maximum energy to the places and products you recommend
Track the buying behaviors of your clients and adjust your approach for success

All this, and plenty of humor, too!
