How was your summer? The beautiful sunny days seem to be continuing, but the leaves are turning and the morning air is crisp, which means it must be Fall.
September 23 was the first official day of Fall, and also the day to register for the Fall Art Program at Paradise Found. It sounds like a wonderful program and I hope all the kids are enjoying it.

I think Fall is a busy time for many Academy Road businesses. Fall fashions arrive everyday by the truckload, and shops are displaying warm and cozy accessories to keep your home comfortable in the colder weather. Shop windows all along Academy are changing to reflect the new season.

Maybe your family plans to visit a corn maze, or you’re looking forward to carving pumpkins. Perhaps you’re hard at work putting summer flower beds to sleep for winter, and planting bulbs that will take root in Spring. Whichever Fall activities you enjoy, I wish you the best of the season!

Simran’s Unexpected Treasures – Truly Unexpected

When you first walk in to Simran’s, you’ll likely be greeted by Ashok Malhotra, the shop’s owner, and taken aback by the amazing display of beauty in one place. “We officially launched our location here during Academy Road Live (June 4th). We have a location at The Forks, but when the opportunity to join Academy came up, we jumped on it,” says Ashok. “What more could we ask for, to be a part of Academy Road, with a brand new store and of course, parking.”

The main focus in Simran’s is jewelry from around the world, including pieces from India, Thailand, Indonesia, Spain, Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Italy and Poland. Items are displayed beautifully throughout the store, but if you ask nicely, there are boxes of hidden treasures that Ashok will gladly show you. “We have a lot of customers that come here specifically from out of town. Academy Road is truly a destination shopping strip. We have wanted to be part of Academy for years, and now we are and it’s been fantastic.”

Amongst the displays of jewelry throughout the store are racks of pashminas, household trinkets, and even a display of fair trade coffees, chocolates and wicker baskets. “All of these items are fair trade, I am very good friends with the director of fair trade in Manitoba, so we like to support and sell these items.”

Broadway Florists – A New Home

After 52 years at their former location in Polo Park Shopping Centre, family-owned Broadway Florists has found a new home at 419 Academy, taking a well-deserved place among the diverse shopping strip. Ernest Cholakis, co-owner of the shop, is very happy about the move. “It’s a good change for us, we get to be a part of this dynamic street, there’s a variety of shops around us, and we get both car and foot traffic to the store.”

With their huge window displays filled with autumnal arrangements, it’s hard to miss Broadway Florists when you pass them. Once inside, you’ll be embraced by warmth and the smell of fresh cut flowers. An enthusiastic member of the staff will greet you and help you decide on the best arrangement for your occasion. The shop has coolers all around, displaying everything from Lucky Bamboo plants, to corsages, to full arrangements and bouquets, which are a gorgeous sight to behold.

The popular colours for fall arrangements are deep reds, pastel peaches, bright oranges, and warm yellows coming together to create comforting bouquets, centerpieces and baskets.
