Welcome to the first issue of Insight for 2010. I would like to thank all my fellow business owners for their commitment to another great holiday season. We saw some wonderful gifts lining the local shelves. And a big 'thanks' to everyone who supported the Academy Road shops over the season. This issue of Insight features Edmond Financial Group. We thought it would be the perfect time to look at financial planning. Not only are we just passed the holiday season, but a new year and new decade may motivate us all to plan ahead for financial freedom. We are always open to your feedback. Drop me a line at info@academyroadbiz.com.

Financial Planning Perfection "We take owning a heritage building on Academy Road very seriously," exclaims Paul Edmond of Edmond Financial Group. Edmond Financial Group (EFG) is not only a proud Academy Road BIZ member, but a great business success story as well. "Winnipeggers have noticed us. We're right around 30% of our business being attributed to the local market," explains Edmond. It's an impressive number considering they have clients from Ontario right through to BC. Planning your financial future is a lot of work, with many details, options and sophisticated equations. Luckily, that's where EFG's financial planners come in. "We ask you 16 standard financial questions [risk tolerance questionnaire], but also add in a specific component. For example, do you own rental properties, or do you have an extensive art collection?" Having a better understanding of your wealth, objectives, timelines and level of risk, helps to create your unique financial path. EFG also uses their 'best of breed' portfolio design software and 'prosperity planning program' to further build their clients' investment portfolios. "Investments need to meet your needs and have a strong performance," exclaims Edmond. EFG offers many products including mutual funds, fixed income securities, guaranteed investments (including GIC's from 30 institutions), group benefit programs and insurance. "Insurance is just another form of investment," explains Edmond. "It's money that comes to you at a specific time." Life insurance, in particular, can help offset high taxes at time of death and protect businesses when the owner dies. There are also some pretty startling stats in regards to critical illness and disability. Up to 1 in 2.5 Canadians will become critically ill (cancer, stroke, heart attack) or become disabled for at least 60 days. "We design solutions that protect people." "Being located on Academy Road has raised our profile," explains Edmond. Edmond treats the zone almost as a separate community. "I've been on the Academy Road BIZ board, representing my fellow business members and am a big BIZ supporter across the city. Whenever you have the synergies from different business owners coming together to improve business conditions, safety and development, it's an awesome thing." EFG's website is a great tool for your financial planning needs, including their 22 tax tips, their risk tolerance questionnaire and videos discussing your path to success, retirement tips, portfolio management and business group benefits insurance. Edmond Financial Group is located at 420 Academy Road, 478-8500, www.efgi.com
