What is a BIZ

The sights and sounds in our community are constantly changing. Spring is a great time for new experiences and shopping pleasures. I've seen some of the colourful creations in the storefronts of many of my favourite Academy shops. I myself am already looking forward to the flower pots and hanging baskets that will be out lining the street before we know it. There's something about vibrant colour that sets off the beauty of the shops and storefonts that make up our business improvement zone.

I've had the pleasure of watching two new businesses open across the street from me. We'll introduce you to both the owners, who are very excited to be a part of the BIZ.

You'll find no more colour than right here at my home away from home. I have the pleasure of introducing Woodlands Gallery to you and suggest my top tips to building your art collection.

We are always open to your feedback. Drop me a line at info@academyroadbiz.com.
Enjoy and see you in the summer!

Mad For Academy Road

It's not a stretch to say many women are mad about shopping. Nicola Loewen is betting on it. Mad About Style Boutique is the BIZ's newest clothing boutique and owner Loewen is ready to encourage some madness.

"I live in the area and have always had a dream to own a boutique on Academy," exclaims Loewen. Focussing on California designer lines that can't be found just anywhere is as much as a focus as the boutique's price points. "$150 and under per separate is where we fit in," explains Loewen. "We want women to be able to get an entire outfit."

Loewen's commitment to her customer begins with designer research and attending the shows first hand. "I'm the owner and buyer for the shop which allows me to paint the picture." Carrying lines such as Burlapp, Collective Concepts, Glam, Addison Story and Second Denim, Mad About Style is well on its way to becoming a fashion force in the BIZ. Already a destination for fashionable women throughout the city, Loewen is attributing half of her business to local residents.

Mad About Style Boutique is located at 542 Academy Road, 489-1151, www.madaboutstyleboutique.blogspot.com.

Fresh Hair is in the Air

Already a mecca for salons in the city, Academy Road is now home to Freshair Boutique. "We've had a lot of walk in traffic from people who are curious of what Freshair is," exclaims owner Praise Okwumabua. "I had a vision for a salon that is eco-friendly. And Academy Road is a very active, progressive community and so I chose here to open."

Freshair is walking the walk when it comes to being eco-friendly. Their focus, after being designated Small Business Green Certified, is to operate day-to-day in an environmentally responsible way. This includes the simple things such as an in-salon recycling program (surprisingly many businesses struggle with such as simple commitment do to the lack of recycling services offered to businesses), all of the paper used to run the salon is post consumer, and the most amazing commitment is their product bottle refill program. "We will refill your bottle of shampoo for 20% less," exclaims Praise. In addition, they are constantly looking at and testing eco-friendly products. Praise estimates that already 30% of the products they sell are eco-friendly.

Praise is also looking at other ways of being on the forefront of her exciting industry. "We're organizing monthly get togethers with stylists from across Winnipeg." Staying on top of fashion, trends and business practices is one way Praise plans on building Freshair. This is also why she likes the idea of owning a business in an area that has a business improvement zone. "It's great if I have questions or ideas for my area. I can speak with a group of like-minded peers on how to better our businesses and community.

Freshair is located at 542a Academy Road, 414-9023.

Academy Road BIZ is always alive with activity, especially when it comes to new businesses opening up in the area. Here's what's new to check out.

Jenny Tasker of Woodlands Gallery

Hanging Around in Academy's Art Scene

Hanging an original piece of art on your wall serves many more purposes than the practicality of filling an empty space. "Art can replace a window. You can escape into art, in addition to being a decorative object," exclaims Jenny Tasker, owner of Woodlands Gallery. "Art is different for everyone. A piece can remind you of a place you used to live, a past vacation, or other life experiences."

When you first walk into the gallery, your emotional response can catch you off guard. The gallery itself is segmented into smaller spaces to create themes and a good flow. Everywhere you turn art hangs, all of which exuding different emotional responses. "Bright, bold, vibrant colours that are great for neutral decor," describes Tasker on the gallery's focus.

Determining what piece, or pieces are going to work in your space, may initially seem a bit overwhelming. When we sat down with Tasker, we wanted to know her top tips when shopping for original art. "To begin with, love it," exclaims Tasker. The gallery at any given time boasts a collection of 30 artists. Each with their own style and viewpoint allows for an almost guaranteed 'love-it factor.'

Secondly, "buying from an established gallery will help ensure that the artwork was created by a professional artist," explains Tasker. The object here is knowing that it will hold its value; knowing there is price consistency from year to year; there will be a consistent series of paintings from the artist to build your collection; and it will help to guarantee style and price.

Next, depending on your need, Tasker doesn't recommend buying art for you entire home at one time. "Pick a room or start with a single piece and build on it." Committing to an artist or a style on a large scale is not always recommended.

"Don't focus on a specific spot. Keep it open. Don't stress to fill a specific need," says Tasker. If you are too focussed you are likely to miss the treasure that is hanging right in front of you.

Research! "Look around. Get a sense of what you like. Our website posts every single piece of art that we have for sale," explains Tasker. The artwork on display in the gallery is constantly changing, but only shows a small percentage of what's available from the artists.

And finally, once you believe you've found that perfect piece, take it home for a trial period. "We offer this service to customers who want to see it in their environment before they buy," says Tasker.

Celebrating a decade of matching people and beautiful art, Tasker loves running a gallery in the BIZ. "Being located in the Academy Road BIZ ensures that the area holds up to the ideas of what boutique customers expect of their shopping district and what merchants offer their customers."

Woodlands Gallery represents over 30 Canadian artists, primarily in the painting medium, as well as glass, ceramics and jewelry. Virtually all of the artwork Woodlands Gallery carries is exclusive to the gallery in Winnipeg. Many artists are nationally recognized and represented.

Plan to attend the gallery's upcoming show featuring artists Marcel Côté, Mélan & Betty Suprowich on April 15th. Check out the gallery's website for examples of the featured art that could be hanging in your home.

Woodlands Gallery is located at 535 Academy Road, 947-0700, www.woodlandsgallery.com

Child Find Manitoba - Canadian Centre for Child Protection
Born from Tragedy, Building our Future

25th Anniversary Celebration Gala Evening
Please join us on April 23, 2010 for a Gala Night to remember and relive the amazing journey Child Find Manitoba has been on for the last quarter century.
Twenty-five years ago, following the disappearance and subsequent murder of Winnipeg teen Candace Derksen, a group of Manitobans came together to fill a void in the services available in our province for families of missing children. Committed to ensuring families would have the help they'd need in the event their child went missing, those dedicated individuals established Child Find Manitoba. Never could they have imagined what their concern for their community and hard work would become.
This is a really important event for our agency and we are very excited to have Wilma Derksen speaking to our guests that evening. Candace’s story is one that most adult Winnipeggers remember so we are really hoping that the community will come out to support the agency that came out of her tragedy and to help us in commemorating her memory. We are hoping that Manitobans will come out to show their appreciation to Wilma and her family for having the courage and determination to create Child Find Manitoba in the midst of the greatest personal tragedy imaginable. Because of Candace and her family, Manitoban children are safer.
Over the past 25 years, Child Find Manitoba has provided quality programs and services to hundreds of thousands of Manitobans. Today, each and every school aged child receives programming and materials from our organization. This is because of Candace. We hope you consider joining us in this milestone 25th anniversary celebration of something positive that was born out of her tragedy. We ask you to share this email with your personal and professional contacts, not only as a way of helping us to inform the public about this event but also as a way to remember Candace and what she has accomplished.

What is a BIZ

Academy Road BIZ is a member of the umbrella group, Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone Association, in which a volunteer board works to create awareness for the merchants, patrons and residents of each zone that they represent.

Consumers and businesses typically notice positive changes when businesses gain control of their business area and oversee functions like streetscaping and marketing.

A BIZ can serve as a tool for organizing businesses toward cooperative efforts and is often key to developing a more attractive physical environment and a more successful business area.
