The Coach Approach, August 2007

Week One: Creation

The theme for August is creation. What do we do daily that creates our future? Many of you are on vacation and thinking you’ve created an awesome holiday! Hurray for you!

"If you want to know your past - look into your present conditions. If you want to know your future - look into your present actions."
Chinese Proverb

Based on your actions today, what can you predict about your future? This is an interesting question to contemplate over the next week.

Here is a wonderful story from from one of my newsletter subscribers, on "Reflection":

"I liked your ‘Reflections’ piece in your newsletter today, especially the bit about the beaver. It’s so cool when wild animals are curious about us!

"I had the strangest thing happen to me yesterday.

"I had been meaning to change the hummingbird food in our window-mounted feeder for a few days. I think it goes ‘off’ after a time, and our local ruby-throated hummingbirds Bubba and Jolene (they're rednecks...ha ha) haven’t been around much in the last few days. I was working at home, sitting at the kitchen table, when I noticed Bubba make a few swoops around the feeder. Suddenly… PECK! … he rapped his beak on the window! It was a startlingly loud sound. I thought he had flown into the window by accident, but he wasn't at all hurt—I watched him fly over to towards the trees by our fire pit.

"Seeing as I can take a hint, I RIGHT AWAY made some new nectar and as soon as it cooled I rinsed and refilled the feeder. I then went to stand in the shade by the fire pit to watch the feeder for a bit. Bubba swooped in within a minute and then flew over and perched in the oak tree above my head. He sat there for a few moments watching me, and then zoomed off.

"I absolutely swear that bird was communicating with me!

"I’m used to all of my animals asking me for what they want or need. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised when the wildlife does, too. It certainly made me reflect on how easy it is to underestimate something that is very small. "

Week Two: Recreation & Re-creation

As you are reading this I am away kayaking in the wilds of Manitoba, with no cell phone coverage therefore no Blackberry service. Recreation time and re-creation time—creating some time and space for myself to just be.

It is an awesome experience to paddle into the sunset every evening. An experience I can draw on for the rest of the year when there is more schedule/work than hours in a day.

How do you create time and space for yourself to just be? How do connect with this, re-create the experience when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed?

Week Three: Create Integrity

"If criticism is mistaken or mean-spirited, rise above it. Maintain the high ground when you're under fire. No victory is worth winning at the expense of picking up the mud that has been slung at you and throwing it back." — Rubel Shelly

It is easy to forget that our actions today create our future when we feel we are being criticized or treated unfairly. Following Rubel Shelly’s advise can create a very different future than the one that often first comes to mind which may be to retaliate. Focus your attention this week on rising above current unpleasantness that may be surfacing. Keep your attention on living a life of integrity and personal high standards.

Week Four: What Are You Creating?

As summer draws to an end and you start to organize your schedules for the fall keep in mind that your actions today create your future. Do the activities you are scheduling support the kind of future you want? What are you creating?
