Every Thursday from 12pm-2pm from March 4 – April 29, chess players will make their best moves against opponents in Kennedy Court at Portage Place.
A chess pro will be on hand to give a guiding hand, and weekly prizes will be awarded to tournament winners. Walk-ups are welcome, but get there early because seats fill up quickly. All prizes are donated by local businesses.
Hosted by Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and the Manitoba Chess Association, Chess in the Court is the winter edition of the summer Chess in the Park tournaments in Air Canada Park.

Stitch ’n Bitch for International Women's Day
March 6 at MAWA, 611 Main Street
Free! All genders welcome! Snacks will be served! Our much-anticipated second annual IWD S’n'B event! Four master craftswomen will be on hand between noon and 4pm to share their skills in wool dying, crochet, bookmaking and doll making. Come early and stay late! Enjoy good food, good company and some good-old-fashioned fun making crafts with friends. This event is cosponsored by The Manitoba Crafts Council, The Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Winnipeg, The Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library, and The Edge.
Lebowskipalooza 2010
March 6
. The Dude is coming back to Winnipeg! Fans of the 1998 cult movie The Big Lebowski will gather at the Garrick Centre, March 6, for Lebowskipalooza 2010, a fundraising event in support of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
In addition to the film screening, fans will be encouraged to dress like their favourite characters and compete for prizes in Lebowski trivia and lobby games.

Freeze Frame Internationl Film Festival
March 4 - 13 at Globe Cinema and IMAX Theatre.
Freeze Frame presents an award-winning collection of films made for children and young people from the all over the world. During the Festival audiences both young and old enjoy:
•screenings of several feature films in 35 mm, and several collections of animated shorts and a couple of documentaries
•Post-screening discussions with international, Canadian and local guest artists
•Hands-on filmmaking workshops with those same guest artists

The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes
Until April 11. Manitoba Museum. A rare opportunity for music lovers to see 84 previously unpublished photos of the Fab Four’s first North American tour. This is the very first time these photographs will be accessible to Manitobans.
This fine art photography exhibit features landmark photos from the CBS Television archives, as well the work of LIFE magazine photojournalist Bill Eppridge – both known for their powerful, rare images of early Beatles’ history. Their extraordinary talent has made The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes one of the most popular travelling exhibitions in North America.

Delicate Beauty: The Ruby Ashdown Porcelain Collection

An exhibition of 18th- and 19th-century British porcelain. The 120 works in the exhibition are part of a 280-piece collection donated to the WAG by Winnipeg collector Mrs. Ruby Ashdown. Until April 18.

Tony Scherman: A Major Acquisition

Encaustic painting is the art of painting with hot wax and Canadian artist Tony Scherman is one of the most provocative practitioners of this challenging art. Exhibition continues until March 14.

15 Minutes
Artist Andy Warhol once said that everyone would, sooner or later, have their own 15 minutes of fame and that’s what the Winnipeg Art Gallery is offering to city artists through their new program 15 Minutes. This free, ongoing series of artist salon evenings takes place the first Thursday of every month. Admission is free.

The Art of Warner Bros. Cartoons
March 5 to May 30
at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
Within the last decades, the Warner Bros. cartoon studio has earned both critical and popular acclaim as the producers of the finest, funniest, and most inventive animated shorts ever made. The Hollywood studio developed and perfected the kind of antic, irreverent, street-smart humour that has characterized much of short-subject animation ever since. Along the way, the Warner shop won six Academy Awards, and created more cartoon stars than any other studio, including Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, and Tweety and Sylvester.

Red River College (RRC) Graphic Design students create original works of art in just over 24 hours. Steve Vogelsang will auction off the artwork Sunday afternoon with proceeds going to Winnipeg Harvest and RRC Graphic Design Students' Graduation Fund.

With this exhibition, Leigh Konyk extends her investigation into photo collage and experimentation with new materials, mediums and imagery to produce complex, layered images that evoke multiple interpretations. Beginning with one main photo as the central focus, ideas, words and images merge together, creating visual narratives; a dialogue with memory and personal history, human behaviour and family dynamics including the complex, yet universal life experiences we all seem to share.

Mother Courage & her Children

A corrosive comedy and a profound statement against war. The play follows the worldly-wise Mother Courage who trails the armies during a war in Europe, shadowing the destruction as she sells provisions from her wagon to whoever will grease her palm. But the war exacts a price – as war always does – and Mother Courage’s soaring profits are tempered by searing loss. In this epic masterpiece, Brecht pits human virtue against the business of war.

Looking Back West

Perry leaves an unstable family life to walk the perilous line as a runaway. As he searches for a sense of home, the teenager connects with other wounded souls — from a fellow runaway to the flawed, but well-meaning family that takes him in — and with animals he knows he can trust. From a spot in Madison Square Park in New York City, Perry takes us on an adventure that is at once heartbreaking, surprising and full of hope.

Kids Explore Spring Break Day Camp
March 29-April 1. Manitoba Children's Museum. Registration is now open for our Kids Explore Spring Break Day Camp. Make new friends and build memories to take back to school during this special week. With days like The World’s a Stage, MCM Scientists, Art Smart, and Party Around the World, the week will whizz by. Daily or weekly registration is available.
Folk for Families
Children love folk music too! There’s no time like the present to get our wee folk in the festival spirit! Local family performers will have little ones singing, dancing, and learning, all while having fun.

Daycare Openings!

Children's House Montessori has been serving the Downtown for over 40 Years. Located at 150 Pacific Avenue, Children’s House is a licensed non-profit independent school that has been providing a high quality of early childhood education. Children’s House offers Montessori-based Nursery and Kindergarten programs for children from 2-1/2 to 6 years of age. Through our well-qualified staff of teachers and our carefully designed programs and learning environment, Children’s House nurtures the development of children intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.
We still have a few spaces in our programs for 2010-2011.

The Great Save

March 12 at MTS Centre from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Canadian Blood Services, in partnership with True North Sports & Entertainment, and the Manitoba Moose, will be staging the largest mobile blood donor clinic ever held in Manitoba.
We are looking to attract more than 600 donors and collect more than 400 units of blood. We are targeting current eligible donors and new donors working downtown.
Your assistance in our collecting of 400 units of blood would mean that as many as 1,200 lives would be saved.

In this workshop you will use card stock, and ST. Armand paper to make a pyramid shaped box, a rectangular card case, and a decorative portfolio envelope. $25 or $20 for Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library Members

Needle Felting
March 13. Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library. With this method of dry wool felting you will learn how to make designs on a flat felting surface, or create a three dimensional felted piece, such as an animal. All materials are provided, and you will leave with the tools you need to do work on projects on your own.

. Understanding Demographic Data (1 day)
For individuals who wish to gain a basic knowledge to better understand data, tables and documentation relating to demography in order to assist them in creating a better analysis. This workshop constitutes presentations, discussions and practical exercises. It reviews various concepts related to demography (birth rates, death rates, fertility, the aging population, natural growth, migration...) as well as the methods used in population projections and estimations.
March 25. How to Use 2006 Census Data (1 Day)
The Census of Population is the most comprehensive source of data on the demographic, social and economic characteristics of Canadians. This workshop deals with the content, geography, products and services of the 2006 Census. It provides demonstration and hands-on exercises with the 2006 Census CD-ROMs.
