Admin Report

I graduated from high school in … dare I reveal it … 1983! We have teachers on staff that had not started school in 1983. Okay, we have teachers that were not even born in 1983!

Looking ahead … the Class of 2014 (our Grade 8’s) began their planning for high school with visits to Shaftesbury and Oak Park High Schools. Check the Pembina Trails School Division for the dates of all High School Open houses for parents and students.

The Class of 2023 is on deck to begin classes at Van Walleghem this fall. We have the pleasure of meeting their parents this Thursday evening for our Kindergarten Information Evening (Feb. 4 at 7:00 pm). Thanks to the 10 current Van Walleghem parents that will act as their guides on school tours. The best source of information on Van Walleghem is often from parents who already have children at Van Walleghem.

Next week we are ready to receive all parents and students at Tri-Conferences. At the time of writing this parents have booked 640 conferences through our online booking system. If you have not booked an appointment visit our website (www.pembinatrails.ca/vw) and click the link to tri-conferences in the lower right corner.

Also next week we are very pleased to have master teacher and popular presenter Martha Kaufeldt here at VW for a parent education evening. Her presentation focuses on what every parent and teacher should know about brain research and learning. Martha is from California and has been brought to Winnipeg by the ASCD, a professional association for educators. Thanks to the ASCD we are able to feature Martha at Van Walleghem without the cost of her flight. Her speaking fees are being covered by the Parent Councils of Van Walleghem, Linden Meadows and Whyte Ridge Schools. This event will take place Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 pm in the VW gymnasium. It is offered at no cost and is open to the entire community. See details below Martha’s picture in this edition of the newsletter.

Another indication of the popularity of VW’s internet use is the online calendar. In the last 31 days there have been 2471 web views of our online calendar. You can find the calendar linked to our homepage at www.pembinatrails.ca/vw .

Do you tweet? You can now follow Van Walleghem on twitter. We try and set a tweet a day about something happening at Van Walleghem. Follow us on by clicking

This month’s video newscast focuses on our efforts to support Haiti and a great achievement for two of our elite athletes. You will find the video report (Van Walleghem News) at www.pembinatrails.ca/

Roots of Empathy

Baby Anders was joined by both his mom and dad for the January family visit. The focus was on emotions. Discussion led to an understanding that babies aren’t bad when they cry; it is a sign that they need something. Anders’ dad, Mike, shared with us what makes Anders happy, sad, scared, and mad. Now that Anders is 6 months old we are seeing many facial expressions!
