Olympic Torch visits VW

Admin Message

2010 is going to be quite a year if this first week is any indication.  We came back to a shiny gym floor and some freshly painted walls… which no one noticed as they returned full of energy and focused on fun and learning.  In this first week alone, on top of classroom activities, the 6-8 Choir, Knitting Club, Book Club, Craft Club, New Media Club and Chess Club met; and the Grade 7 & 8 basketball teams started practicing.

Also in the first week, thanks to Aileen Madden, VW had its own Olympic Torch Parade.  Please see the video report

What is your New Year's Resolution?  The VW resolutions are in our School Plan which you can read in its entirety by visiting this link. Our goals focus on implementing the latest techniques in literacy instruction, English as an Additional Language, Information and Communication Technology and Oral French.  But behind the goals is a professional culture that can be summarized in three words… Collaborate, Innovate, and Care.

We welcome Mme Bevan who replaces Mme Munro who is on maternity leave.

Please enjoy this month's Van Walleghem Voice newsletter.

Bravo to all of our students on a wonderful “December Extravaganza”, our holiday concert on December 15, 2009. An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the energy and enthusiasm of our students and the support and encouragement from our staff and community of families.

Grade 8s See Science Research in Action

This month the grade 8 students got the opportunity to tour four different science laboratories at St.  Boniface Hospital Research Centre.  While there, students learned how scientific research is conducted as well as recent discoveries that have been made about the benefits of flax and about how cardiovascular disease impacts the human heart.  Students took part in some hands on activities where they used pipettes to load a gel for DNA analysis. A special thank you to the researcher at St. Boniface Research centre for encouraging and inspiring scientific learning in our students.

Counsellor’s Corner

submitted by Mrs. K. Lewis

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you had an enjoyable winter break. Returning to school in January can bring challenges to students and families with the return to routine of getting up early in the morning and having to focus for long periods of time during the day. Irritability and tiredness is often noticed the first few weeks back at school by parents and school staff.

Attention Deficit Disorder (AD/HD)

submitted by

Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba

Children with AD/HD can often place a tremendous strain upon family relationships. ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, however, how the child interacts with his or her environments over time will have a lot to do with the outcome. Parents have a lot of control in the environments of the child, and may be able to help provide a positive outcome for the child.
