Peregrine Falcon Watch

Peregrine Falcon - close up & personal - IMG_8631 by foghornleg90

CBC Manitoba is going to the birds this summer, and we want you to be part of it.

Since 1989, a pair of endangered Peregrine Falcons has been nesting on the Radisson Hotel in downtown Winnipeg . Beginning 2006, CBC Manitoba, Shaw and the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project ( Manitoba ) have collaborated to provide Manitobans with the opportunity to observe each year's family of Peregrines on the Falcon Cam.

Log on to http://www.cbc.ca/manitoba

/features/falcon/   from now until the end of July to watch our live Falcon Cam. Watch the baby falcons until the day they fly the coop. Log on to find out more about this species at risk and the efforts being made to preserve the peregrine falcon.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Wilma Chartrand, Executive Assistant, CBC Manitoba at 788-3160.

Strong Beginnings

Planning is presently underway for Strong Beginnings.

What is Strong Beginnings?

It is an assessment project designed to enhance the beginning of the year assessment, which begins in all classrooms on the first day of school and continues throughout the year. The Strong Beginnings activities are not tests. They are tasks designed to help us to get to know our students and how they learn in order to know where to begin with instruction.

Administration Message

Welcome to the June newsletter. Congratulations!  You found the time to read this newsletter.  That is no easy task, especially in June.

You may find the following link to our next year's homeroom class configuration interesting:

http://vwenews.pbworks.com/2009-2010+Projected+Classes

We are expecting our population to remain stable at around 565 with 26 homeroom groups.  Staffing will also remain stable.  New additions include Mrs. Amanda Ciavarelli as VW's new full-time Music teacher, and Stephanie Davis who will teach some Music and some French classes. Both teachers are graduates of the University of Manitoba , School of Music and have degrees in Music and Education.

Space Camp 2009 was a great success for 38 or Grade 8 students.  The photo above depicts the training simulators in Montreal . If you like hands-on science, you will be interested in the contribution in this month's newsletter from Mrs. Else who took a group of Grade 8s on a research mission to lake Winnipeg.

This weekend the front flower bed area will be transformed from a tangle of weeds to a beautiful garden, thanks to the Parent Council's leadership and fundraising.  We will send out a before and after photo.

Also look for our Community Report in your child's report card.  The Community Report chronicles our growth and success towards our mission - Working together, we provide a respectful and caring learning community where all individuals can reach for personal excellence and grow in social responsibility.

Sincerely,

Brad Burns and Cheryl Chuckry

Science Trip to Gimli

As part of their study of water, students in Mrs. Else's Grade 8 Science classes travelled to Gimli where they boarded the Namao, a Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium vessel.

Once on the Namao, students took both biological and physical data to help them determine the health of Lake Winnipeg . Through this activity students were able to get hands on experience in data sampling and learn what factors impact a watershed and the health of the lake.

Roots of Empathy

Only two more baby visits and we will have completed our Roots of Empathy program with Mrs. Craddock's Gr. 6 class.  We have watched baby Hazel grow and develop and continue to see something new each visit.  She is making sounds and formulating words and has shown an interest in music.

Wolverine Words

Bouquet of Flowers by Keith Kerr

As our spring skipping clubs wrap up here at Van Walleghem School, we must send bouquets of thanks to all of the teachers that helped to supervise our Skipping Clubs over the past few months. Without them, our active skippers would not have had the chance to improve their jumping skills and fitness levels.

Thanks to our volunteers, Mrs. Bridgeman, Mrs. Perron, Mrs. Fraser, Mme Deeley, Mme Kovach, Mme Lagace, Mrs. Swintak, Mrs. Derksen, Mme Lacasse, Mrs. Hughes, and Mrs. Craddock. Our Grade 5 assistants who helped with the grade 1-3 skipping club are also greatly appreciated: Paulina, Julianna, Gabby, Justine, and Su Kyung.

Parent Council Report

It is hard to believe that June is now upon us and the school year is coming to a close.  Parent Council has been busy through out the year in an effort to complement the achievements of the school's administrators, teachers, and our children.  Some of our accomplishments over this past school year have been:  a financial contribution to enable the school to purchase document cameras, a financial contribution to allow the school to purchase French and English books for the school's home reading program; a family fun night; fun lunches, financial contribution towards the student led “Brick by Brick” project; Gourmet Kitchen fundraiser; the introduction of the weekly Lunch Lady Program; and of course the upcoming school family picnic.  Parent Council also recently approved funds to beautify the front entrance of our school.  As a result, over the coming weeks you will see a much needed landscaping “face lift” occurring at the front of our school.
