WSO
Project Report
Mrs.
Craddock’s class has been working hard since
the beginning of January on a project with the WSO.
Although the final goal of the project is a performance
on stage with the WSO, students have learned that
there is much more to the performance than just
the final performance itself. In fact, there are
so many elements to this project that each student’s
individual talents and abilities have been called
on as part of the preparation.

Congratulations
to all the VW choir members that participated in

- Beneathe the Banyon Tree
On
March 18th in the afternoon, Grade 1 Mrs. Wilson's
class along with Grade 2 Mrs. Lawrie's class are
viewing the play "Beneath the Banyon Tree".
This is a story of Anjali, a young dancer who has
recently moved to Canada, entertains and educates
us all about what it's like to find your place among
new peers. The dance, rhythms and colours of India
infuse the drama with a richness that has captivated
young audiences across the country. Permission slips
will be going home the second week in March.

“Wow,
they memorized the script!” I exclaimed.
“They wrote the script!” replied M Veen

At our recent Festival assembly many classes had
dramatic presentations. Please see your video newscast
for highlights

The
assembly was one of several events included in this
month’s newscast brought to you by the New
Media Club.
We had many successful evening events in February.
Tri-Conferences were a great success with over 800
conferences spread over 2 evenings and a ½
day. The Kindergarten Information Evening was standing
room only. We send out a special thanks to the 9
volunteer parents that gave tours to perspective
families. There are currently 41 FI students and
10 EI students registered. Finally, our parent education
evening with Martha Kaufeldt was very well received
with some 80 people in attendance. You can find
Martha’s handouts at http://ow.ly/16jR9
The Olympic spirit continues to inspire our students
to excellence. Basketball is going strong with our
own version of March Madness. All teams have been
involved in tournaments both at VW and at other
schools. Badminton players have had their first
meeting this week. Grade 6 and 7 students are off
to Ski at Holiday Mountain on March 11. Our coaches
deserve a gold medal for their inspiring work students.
Reports cards will be sent home on March 26.
Congratulations! You are reading the Van Walleghem
Voice – we know how hard it can be to get
time for the school newsletter. Your suggestions
for stories or comments on what you find here are
always welcome.

Our
40 cross-country ski club members were very enthusiastic
as they ventured out onto the ski trails behind
Van Walleghem on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school
throughout January and February with Mrs. Sauder.
We covered a lot of territory and mastered a variety
of ski skills. We had so much fun in the fresh air.
Thanks to parent volunteers Leesa Sylvestre and
Susan Lazarowich for joining us on several occasions.

Students
visit CBC
Learning
for Life
The
Learning for Life Program has had an extremely busy
February. This past month, we had the opportunity
to do a number of excursions, many hours were spent
in the kitchen as well as working hands on with
money. Earlier in the month, Marcy Markusa from
CBC radio came to do a story on us here at VW and
to say Thank you, we prepared hot chocolate and
traditional sugar pies and delivered them to Marcy
and her team! Marcy was kind enough to give us a
tour of of the television studio and we even got
to sit at the broadcast desk - wow, what a morning!

The
Knit Club
Following
the earthquake in Haiti, students in the VW Knit
Club were motivated to take action and help the
devastated country. They knitted and crocheted as
fast and as hard as they could for two weeks then
sold their dishcloths, scarves, cell phone holders,
and bookmarks during the Tri Conferences. Through
the support of VW’s students, parents and
staff, the club raised $270 for the Red Cross’s
relief efforts in Haiti. Thank you to all parents,
staff, and students who contributed to this fundraising
project! Together, we are making a difference.
