This
year we`re proud to report that we had more students
than ever take part in our September Cross Country
Run Club. Over 90 students were dedicated participants
who attended noon hour practices with Mrs. Sauder
and Mrs. Kinley to improve their running skills
and fitness. Bravo to all runners who attended
both Divisional Fun Runs at Assiniboine Park and
worked to do their personal best at each race!
Thank you to Mrs. Hughes, Mme Lacasse, Mme Kramer,
and Mr. Weber, Mrs. Craddock, and Mme Munro for
supervising and cheering us on at the Park. Several
runners worked to achieve their personal best
times. Hope to see you all at Marathon Club in
the spring. Congratulations also to Mason W.,
Price M., Riley K., and Kyler V. who took part
in the Provincial Cross Country Championships
and won the grade 4 boys Provincial Team banner.

Look
Who Came Crawling into Room 7 . . .
During
the month of October, grade two students have
been busy putting their scientific skills to practice
by doing research about different spiders. After
learning about seven different types of spiders,
these arachnologists invented their own types
of spiders and then did independent research about
their favourite kind of spider. English Language
Arts, French Language Arts, math, science and
art all played a part in this integrated classroom
theme.
Strong
Beginnings
Van
Walleghem School once again had two very successful
and informative Strong Beginning days September
25 and 28th. Many teachers implemented a new assessment
system called Fountas and Pinnell.
Fountas and Pinnell recommend all students have
a balanced literacy program. Balanced literacy
incorporates all reading approaches realizing
students need to use multiple strategies to become
proficient readers. Balanced Literacy programs
provide and cultivate the skills of reading, writing,
thinking, speaking and listening for all students.

the winners' circle, Manitoba Marathon three-peat
winner, Mike Booth, took the 10 k with an incredible

Walkathon
raises the bar!
The
21 st Annual VW Walkathon, which saw 560 eager students
walking in support of extra curricular programs
at the school, went off without a hitch on October
2 nd . Students walked, ran and jogged their way
through the afternoon with an assist of cool but
not wet conditions from the weatherman. Many thanks
to the community for its support; and an extra big
thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped
to supervise the Walkathon.
The
funds that students raised through pledges will
go towards school wide funding of such things as
Artists in the School program, numerous sports teams
and interest and craft clubs that are run by staff
throughout the year. In addition, each classroom
will receive a grant to enhance student learning
through the subsidy of field trips etc. An assembly
to celebrate the commitment and effort made by Van
Walleghem students in the raising of over $17 000
will occur in the next few weeks.

HOLIDAY GIFT BAZAAR
Have
you heard about the new shopping experience coming
to our area? It's already the talk of the
town and you have an opportunity to be a part of
it!!!
If you are an entrepreneur, run a home-based business,
or “direct sell” a product, we want
you. If you are a Discovery Toys or Tupperware consultant,
or a Silpada Jewelry or Avon representative this
is the event for you. You can be a part of the VW
HOLIDAY GIFT BAZAAR if you sell Norwex Environ products,
or Epicure products, Usborne Books, or fashions
and accessories. We’d love to have you set
up a table if you represent home décor or
healthy living products, if you provide beautiful
and thoughtful gift baskets, or if you are an artist
creating special gifts on your favored medium. You
get the point - the long and the short of it is
that you’d be a great addition to our vendor
fair and gift sale.

Roots
of Empathy
We
are pleased to announce that two classes in our
school will be participating in the Roots of Empathy
program this year. Ms. Derksen’s and Ms. Palmer’s
Grade 3 class will be visited by Baby Anders and
instructed by your school counsellor, Ms. Lewis.
In addition, Mr. Veenhuyzen’s Gr. 6 class
will be visited by Baby Lincoln and instructed by
returning support teacher, Ms. McNabb Davis. Each
class will be visited by their baby nine times during
the year. Both Anders and Lincoln made their initial
classroom visits in October. We look forward to
watching Anders and Lincoln grow and develop as
our school year unfolds.
Your VW Roots of Empathy Instructors,
Ms. Lewis & Ms. McNabb Davis
H1N1
Update
The
students at VW are well trained on handwashing and
cough etiquette. We have some great videos
for both Early and Middle Years students as well
as posters in washrooms and classrooms.
Hand
sanitizer is available in all classrooms as has
been the case for several years.
The
province is not using schools for vaccinations for
H1N1 as school age children are currently not on
the priority list. This may change.
If you fall into one of the priority categories
you may visit one of the many vaccination sites
in Winnipeg - the closest being the Grant Park Shopping
Centre, Theatre entrance.
If
any school has unusually high levels of absenteeism,
this information will be posted on our web site.
Currently all schools are reporting normal levels.
