1. Forums for learning.

This year's convention will differ from previous sessions in several ways. A new highlight to convention will be a number of delegate forums which will take place on Friday afternoon. The workshops, which centre on each of the ELCIC's five organizing pillars adopted by National Church Council in March 2008 (Effective Partnerships, Compassionate Justice, Spirited Discipleship, Focus Framework and Diverse Faces), are designed to be interactive and include strategies for helping members express faithful mission through their local congregations and in their local context. Find out more about the forums (scroll to page 5 of the pdf).

2. Worship central to convention.

Worship has always been central when we gather together as church. Attendees at this year's convention will have many opportunities to come together and worship as one family as the morning and evening worship will be integrated into the convention agenda versus having to break from the convention and move to a separate venue, as had been the case at past conventions.

Opening and closing worship will also be rich with song, prayer and liturgy with offerings going to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (opening worship) and Canadian Lutheran World Relief (closing worship).

All delegates and visitors are reminded to bring a copy of the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (EvLW) book to convention. If you do not have a copy of your own, consider borrowing a copy from your congregation or a neighbouring congregation. EvLW will be the primary resource for all convention worship services. If you are unable to access a copy, the worship books will be available for sale at convention or a limited number of copies will be available to sign out by deposit at time of registration.

3. Convention choir still looking for volunteers.

Do you like to sing? Delegates and visitors are invited to join the Convention Choir. The Choir will provide a core for congregational singing, as well as do some singing on its own. The first rehearsal is on Thursday, June 25 at 12:00 noon in the War Memorial Gym at the University of British Columbia. Come and make a joyful noise to God!

Interested? Please contact Lorraine.

4. Convention business.

The National Convention is the highest officiating body of the ELCIC and meets every two years. Delegates to convention meet to discern the business of the church. This work is done through the presentation of reports, respectful conversation and motions before convention. Motions can come from a variety of sources. National Church Council brings motions to convention (these can be found in the Bulletin of Reports). Motions can also be forwarded by Synod councils, congregations and individuals. These motions are brought to convention through the Committee of Reference and Council who review them, make sure they are in order, and then make recommendations to convention regarding their disposition.

5. Prayers for Convention

ELCIC members are invited to pray for the whole church and those preparing for the upcoming National Convention. Individuals and congregations are encouraged to use the following prayer from Evangelical Lutheran Worship (pg 76):

Almighty God, your Holy Spirit equips the church with a rich variety of gifts. Grant that we may use them to bear witness to Christ in lives that are built on faith and love. Make us ready to live the gospel and eager to do your will, so that we may share with all your church in the joys of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
