Jaret Horbatiuk

1997 Structural Engineering Technology Grad

In a brightly lit office in Winnipeg's Exchange District, just steps away from the site of the Paterson GlobalFoods Institute at Red River College, sits a positive and upbeat entrepreneur.

For the past five years, Jaret Horbatiuk has been designing and building interiors for businesses and retail outlets throughout Winnipeg. His company, Tractus Projects, transforms old and beat up interiors into bold and awe-inspiring rooms and he got his start at Red River College.

After finishing high school, Jaret looked into post-secondary school options and found one with just the right mix. "The Structural Engineering Technology co-op program at Red River College offered me the chance to learn and get paid work experience in a field that I was interested in," he says. "The co-op program style really appealed to me."

Before he even graduated, the company Jaret was doing his final co-op work term at hired him. "The co-op program really helped me to get my foot in the door at the companies I worked for," he says. "I found myself getting more excited with each work term."

After working at a few engineering and architectural firms as well as a roofing company, Jaret formed Tractus Projects, a commercial interior building company, in 2005 and quickly began to conquer dull and outdated interiors across Winnipeg. He was responsible for the redesign of the popular restaurant, The Line Up in Cityplace, creating more seating room in a very limited space. Jaret also worked on the interior of the Marigold restaurant on Inkster, giving it a rich, welcoming feeling.

Now a husband and father of two children, Jaret has the same passion and excitement to excel in his field as he did when he was a student and he continues to look forward to working on new and challenging projects in the future.

Lost Alumni -- Found!

Last month, during a Red River College wine and cheese event at the beautiful new Manitoba Hydro building in downtown Winnipeg, the College found 62 lost alumni who work for Manitoba Hydro. That brings the total number of RRC alumni at Manitoba Hydro up to 156!

During the event, Bob Brennan, President and CEO of Manitoba Hydro and RRC Honorary Diploma recipient, spoke to the guests about the great relationship Manitoba Hydro has with RRC. Interim College President, Catherine Rushton, echoed his comments and said that it’s important for alumni to stay connected to the College because they are RRC ambassadors.

Over 100 people in attendance were treated to a delectable array of fine cheeses and fruit, shrimp, lamb, sushi as well as our famous crepes. While the guests mingled and became reacquainted with old friends, the Chris Berti Trio provided some lively background music.

Manitoba Hydro isn’t the only place hiring a lot of Red River College graduates. After a recent call for alumni at the College, we found out that there are over 220 alumni who are employed in the RRC workforce!

Does your company hire a lot of RRC graduates? Let us know! Contact Dale Oughton at 632-2359 or e-mail alumni@rrc.mb.ca.

John P. Gale - 1980 Mechanical Engineering Technology Graduate

Innovative and entrepreneurial, John P. Gale made his mark in the mineral drilling industry before turning his attention to real estate development.

A native of The Pas, Gale began his career setting up remote telephone systems in Northern Manitoba after obtaining a Certificate in Radio and TV Servicing from Keewatin College.

Seeking greater challenges, he moved to Winnipeg to pursue a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Red River College. Gale graduated in 1980 and began working in research and development for Midwest Diamond Drilling.

With Gale leading the way, the company revolutionized the industry through the development of a new bit that was capable of drilling rock at three times the speed of the technology it replaced.
