Alumni Profile - Rob Olson

1982 Business Administration Grad

In the late 1970s, Rob Olson was fresh out of high school and interested in agriculture so he enrolled in an agriculture program at university. After a year, he decided to take a break from school, however, he found himself back in the classroom soon after - this time at Red River College.

Rob liked the structured nature of the Business Administration program at RRC and felt that the style would help him succeed. Two years later, Rob graduated from the Business Administration program and quickly got hired as an assistant restaurant manager, thanks to a connection he made while in school.

Several years later, Rob began working at the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation. When he started in 1985, he was one of only 68 employees. However, he worked his way up the corporate ladder to the position of General Manager of the McPhillips Street Station Casino and helped grow the organization to over several thousand employees by the time he left in 2001.

In the summer of 2001, Rob came full-circle when he returned to the place that gave him his education. He got hired as RRC’s Director of Auxiliary Services and soon moved up to become Associate VP of Campus Services, now called Associate VP of Facilities.

Rob is an avid sports enthusiast and outside of work, he both plays and coaches recreational hockey and is currently the coach of his 13-year-old son’s hockey team, the River Heights Cardinals.

Recently, Rob became the acting VP of Administration in addition to Associate VP of Facilities at Red River College.

RRC Grads, let’s talk CMA

As of September 2009, the Certified Management Accountants of Manitoba have approved an exception to the University Degree Policy allowing individuals who have graduated from a two-year Business Administration diploma program with an accounting major to be eligible to receive their CMA designation.

Consideration will be given to graduates who possess an academic cumulative GPA of 3.5, have a minimum of 12 months of full-time work related accounting experience, and submit character references from their employer. Once eligibility is granted, an individual would complete the 10 month, part-time Accelerated Program, write the CMA Entrance Exam and complete the two-year, part-time Strategic Leadership Program.

Individuals interested in learning more should contact the CMA Manitoba office at 943-1538 or cmamb@cma-canada.org
