RRC Appoints New President & CEO
Forsyth is currently the President of Northwest Community College (NWCC), based in Terrace, British Columbia, serving 10 communities in northern BC. She has held this position for the past ten years. "Red River College is a dynamic and innovative institution that makes a significant contribution to the social and economic development of Manitoba," said Forsyth. "It is a good fit with my values and leadership style and a terrific opportunity." Forsyth cited RRC's national reputation, growing applied research program in sustainable technology, capital expansion plan and focus on aboriginal education as factors that drew her to the position. "Stephanie's positive and supportive leadership style will nurture the people-centered culture we're creating at Red River College," said Sheryl Feller, Chair of RRC's Board of Governors. "The Board is particularly impressed with her commitment to enhancing post-secondary education for aboriginal students, which is a strategic priority for the College and the Province." Alumni Profile - Jacques Lavergne 2001 Business Administration Grad
From coming up with innovate marketing strategies for The Fairmont Winnipeg to making sure the hotel rooms are filled, Jacques Lavergne has a challenging job and he excels at it each day, thanks in part to the training he received at Red River College. Having worked in the hospitality industry before, Jacques wanted to get a better grasp of the business side of things, which is why he enrolled in the Business Administration program at RRC. “The Entrepreneurship course in the Business Administration program helped me to shift my brain to start thinking like a businessman,” says the 34-year-old husband and father of two. “That has really helped me throughout my career.” Just weeks after graduating from the program, Jacques was hired as a Sales Representative for The Fairmont Winnipeg and quickly climbed the corporate ladder to Sales Manager. While in this position, Jacques successfully carved out a market for the hotel by heavily promoting it to actors and film crews working in Winnipeg just as the television and film industry in the city was booming. In 2004, Jacques left Winnipeg for western Canada and spent a few years working in Fairmont hotels in BC and Alberta. He returned to The Fairmont Winnipeg in early 2009 to begin his current job as Director of Sales and Marketing. At that time, the economy was sputtering and people weren’t spending as much money, making it more challenging to fill the hotel rooms. “Even though I didn’t have much experience in this position, it felt like I was on a level playing field with my counterparts in the industry,” says Jacques. “No matter how much experience you had, nobody had really been in this economic climate before, which allowed me to get my footing in the new position without falling behind.” Today, The Fairmont Winnipeg is one of the city’s most popular hotels, which keeps the sales and marketing team busy. Jacques wouldn’t want it any other way. Check out The Fairmont Winnipeg, site of this year’s RRC Alumni Dinner! Alumni Speak to RRC Staff
Three RRC Business Administration grads visited the College on June 10 and shared stories about how RRC helped them in their careers to a captive audience of faculty and staff. The alumni were brought in to show faculty and staff the positive impact that they have on student’s lives. Ryan Garriock - President of Garriock Insurance The Garriock family has been a longtime supporter of the College. Ryan's brother and sister have each graduated from the College and their father, David Garriock, is a RRC grad and Distinguished Alumni. Joe Thompson - Employment Equity Advisor for Manitoba Hydro Joe has been a big supporter of RRC, specifically the School of Indigenous Education for many years. He's always quick to volunteer for events and he appeared in the RRC billboard campaign in 2009. Diane Wilburg - Director of Business Development for Freedom 55 Diane is an active RRC volunteer and attends all alumni functions. She is a big supporter of hiring RRC graduates and is extremely proud of the education she received from the College. RRC Gains 1,500 New Alumni
(Left to right: Ken Webb, VP, Academic and Research, Diane McGifford, MLA, John P. Gale, RRC Distinguished Alumni recipient, Catherine Rushton, Interim President, RRC) Red River College’s Alumni network grew by leaps and bounds in early June when over 1,500 people graduated from the College. In fact, there were so many graduates that a third convocation ceremony was added to the traditional two ceremonies. 2010 Red River College Distinguished Alumni recipient John P. Gale attended the convocation ceremony on Thursday, June 3, and received the award. John will be honoured again at the RRC Alumni Dinner coming up in November.
