Isn’t life busy these days?  We are all moving in a million directions and it seems that family and friends sometimes take a back seat to our meetings and work responsibilities.  I know if I don’t plan ahead, my social life is non-existent.  I don’t know how and when this happened, but I’ve come to believe that it’s not changing any time soon.

I think many people are on the same treadmill and that’s why we are noticing such an incline in family reunion travel and girlfriend trips. (I have to say that the guys had this figured out years ago with their golf, hunting and fishing trips!!)  Family travel is on the rise and we are seeing so many forms of it these days.  Grandparents are taking grandchildren on cruises to Alaska, couples are getting married in tropical destinations, mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends are going on shopping trips or cooking schools.  People are making plans to spend quality time with their loved ones in destinations all around the world.

Last February, I went on a trip with my sister and I can tell you there’s nothing quite like SISTER TIME!  Sisters can mock one another and get away with it.  Sisters can shed a tear over the silliest thing and know the other is only a hug away.  Sisters can party with the best of them.  And this particular sister of mine (I have 3 others that I travel with) is super fun.

I asked Diana if she would join me on Seadream Yacht Club.  I have had my eye on this type of trip for a very long time and I thought it was time to go exploring.  The great thing about my sister is that if you catch her at the right time, she’s totally game.  And the time was right.

After embarking in Barbados, we checked into our stateroom.  I immediately understood why Seadream refers to their experience as “yachting” not “cruising” as the ships hold only 110 passengers at full capacity.  As we explored the ship, we gave each other concerned glances wondering how we were going to manage a full 7 days on such a small ship.  Would we be bored?  How many books did we have to read?

I can tell you that the experience was so surprising and rewarding that I never even read one book.  We met the most wonderful people and visited wonderful little island jewels in the southern Caribbean.  When we were hot, we dove off the back of the ship.  When we were hungry, we ate the most

incredible food.  When we got tired, we took a nap.  It was all so easy and so comfortable.

The Seadream experience is very unique.  Every crew member has had exceptional training and the service is so personal and intimate. My sister happens to have the best tunes on her IPOD and the crew turned all the musical entertainment over to her.  She quickly became known as the ‘music lady’ by both crew and passengers.  Each night we would make our way to the outdoor bar where she would play tunes like Mustang Sally as everyone got up and danced.   We were having a party!

There are so many wonderful things about SeaDream.  The food is so fantastic that even when we didn’t feel like eating, we did.  Good thing the gym had all the right equipment.  The staterooms, though small, were very well equipped and we managed to unpack all of the clothes we would never wear over the course of the week.

Casual, warm, friendly, fun, easy………………….these are the words that describe the SeaDream experience.  Back up the atmosphere with the highest of quality and this is one “hot” holiday.

So added to my list is a SeaDream “cruise” in the Mediterranean.  Because the yachts are small they are able to go in the tiniest of ports.  That makes for one pretty unique itinerary.

SeaDream has a special on right now, so it’s a great time to try out this really unique sailing opportunity.  For those of you who receive our Cruise and Travel Lifestyles magazine there’s an article about the SeaDream experience on page 34.  If you’d like to receive this magazine, contact Carmen.  She’ll make sure you’re on the list for the next issue.

PS:  Last time I told you about our upcoming Dubai to Athens cruise, A Sheik Affair.  I promised more details and I'm happy to tell you that we've included them in this issue.

It won't be long before you're paying extra for all checked luggage (or why you need a travel consultant)
Paying for checked baggage isn't new. Ryanair has done it for years, but as a strategy to be a low-cost airline, and to keep its fares low. Fees for checked luggage is becoming mainstream. Air Canada recently introduced a new policy that effective for travel in July, you'll have to pay a $25 fee each way for your second piece of luggage.

United Airlines is going a step further. It's applying fees to all checked baggage. The service fee to check one bag for domestic travel will be $15 each way and the fee to check three or more bags, overweight bags or items that require special handling will increase from $100 to $125 or from $200 to $250, depending on the item. While they call it a change to their "domestic checked-bag policy" flights to and from Canada on UA are included.

Rules on airlines are changing daily, so don't assume anything. The team at The Travel Gallery is working hard to keep abreast of everything and to make sure you're aware of how changes affect you.

Life-long learning is near and dear to The Travel Gallery team. A day rarely goes by without at least one of us taking a workshop, a webinar, attending a conference or a product launch, or upgrading our technical skills. It's the only way we can keep on top of this fast-paced, ever changing industry, and make sure that we're equipped to give you top-notch service every time we interact. In this issue of TravelChatter we want to focus on two recent experiences. In May, Lorna Cook (VP) and Nicole Blondeau (Manager, Special Projects) spent four days aboard Holland America's Volendam on its North Pacific Cruise. Their reflections are included below.

This week, a group of us attended an open house at the Hotel Saskatchewan. The reception was held in the Royal Suite where Queen Elizabeth, President Clinton and Mick Jagger have all spent the night. Wow. The suite is beautiful. And of course as guests we were given a taste of the Hotel Saskatchewan's famous brand of service: wonderful, welcoming staff, delicious food and lovely wine. There are two things that we want to draw your attention to: the first is the establishment of The Hotel Saskatchewan Club. Think of it as a business club - it's for local people. There are many benefits including: valet parking, complementary boardroom use, signing privileges, friends and family guest room rates on weekends ($50 a night - can you believe it?, fitness club memberships, club lounge, formal and informal dining, and the opportunity to take advantage of reciprocal club services around the world. Another thing we learned about the Hotel Saskatchewan is that they are putting in new elevators this year. It's a huge project and they hope to have it completed within the next three months. Once they do, you'll be able to travel much more quickly to the top floors.

Thank you to everyone for the lovely evening.

Lorna and Nicole sail on Holland America's Volendam

Embarkation:

Lorna: It was very exciting when I arrived for embarkation because two cruise ships were boarding at the same time so there were masses of people in line, although we were moved very quickly.

Nicole: Embarkation was exciting, a bit chaotic. Getting on the ship I could see very quickly the staff is very friendly, everyone says hello as you walk by.

The decor

Lorna: The Volendam is a newly renovated cruise ship and it was exciting to be the first to sail on it after the restoration. The décor was very colorful with a red, orange, yellow and royal blue theme throughout. Some of the new furniture was very futuristic.

The stateroom

Nicole: It definitely made a difference to have the larger suite and balcony. Sitting on the

balcony when the ship is cruising at sea is a surreal experience for sure: you, the ocean, and nothing else.

Dining

Lorna: The formal dining room was lovely and I attended a Master Chef’s dinner which was theatrical and delicious. The dessert bar was scrumptious and I was able to have ice cream every day.

Nicole: The Lido restaurant is a buffet type style which was nice for most of our meals.

Activities on board

Lorna: I visited all of the bars and lounges, as well as the disco and casino and participated in many of the activities. There were so many things to do while on board such as attending a jewelry show, a liquor tasting event, cooking classes, bingo and several cocktail parties directed at various age groups, including singles events with live entertainment. The fitness and spa facilities were exceptional offering a variety of group fitness classes, state of the art fitness equipment and relaxing spa treatments.

Shore Excursions: Best of Seattle (Lorna & Nicole)

We were taken by bus on a tour of the Space Needle and driven by some historical sites in Seattle. The highlight was going to the World Famous Pike Place Fish Market renowned for the FISH Philosophy morale boosting training courses. The market had numerous artists and craftsmen so a great place to shop for gifts.

Astoria, Oregon (Lorna & Nicole)

A tour through a lovely beach town with some time to spend on the beach and shop a little. The weather was over 100 degrees F so it was not the best day to be riding on a bus tour. I loved this small town area. It was literally like stepping into a movie set. The houses were the quintessential small beach town homes. They were beautiful (and, we were told by our guide, very expensive).

Victoria, High Tea

Lorna: After a wonderful tour of all the city of Victoria and particularly the prestigious homes along the coast, I attended High Tea at the fabulous Empress Hotel in downtown Victoria. This was an extraordinary experience because the hotel is very regal, the tea service was amazing. It was by far my favorite tour on this trip.

Victoria, Highlights & Cragdarroch Castle tour

Nicole: My absolute favorite stop. I hadn’t been here since I was a child and had no memory of it. I fell in love with the harbour area. We saw the famous Empress Hotel, Legislature building, other city highlights and the Craigdarroch castle. I then walked around the harbour area, took in the wax museum and the Royal British Museum. Both of which were worth the admission cost and time. The harbour area is just so beautiful, the people of Victoria seemed to all come out to enjoy the beautiful day and walk by the water.

Daydreaming at Niagara-on-the-Lake

"The family of TM Adamson celebrates April 22, 2002." That's what my bench says.

It overlooks the mouth of the Niagara River, where it meets Lake Ontario. The lake is oceanic. Nothing "lake" about it really. The shore line grips the river's edge; the cottages and homes, too. Lake Ontario empties itself into the horizon with variegated blues and greens elevating the water, almost cliff-like. If I look at it one way, it's almost prairie-like. My soul rests among prairie vistas, yet feels very much at home on this faux-ocean edge. It's the connection of the horizon to the vastness of possibility, to that one human story which exists somewhere, way out there. Somewhere on that scape of wavy water, just beyond, is someone, doing. From my vantage point today, perhaps he's only a dot, an elusive glimmer that flashes for a mere second. I may not see his effort at all. I may not notice that he lies afloat in a barge, contemplating someone far away, on a shoreline, on a bench, with sketchpad in hand, or, pehaps, a journal.

Until next time
