Administration
Message
December
sparkles with fresh snow on the ground and the excitement
of the holidays in the air. In typical five-star
fashion, our students recognize that the this time
of year can be difficult for some of our fellow
Winnipeggers. Student Voice will be holding
a Koats for Kids drive (coats, ski pants, scarves,
hats and mitts). They are collecting gently-used,
clean garments until December 14. Many classrooms
will be preparing hampers to assist families in
need. It is heart-warming to see that our
students appreciate that they are fortunate and
are actively involved in helping others.
With
the arrival of winter weather, you may wish to add
your name to the notify list for our advisory page. We
use the advisory to send an electronic message in
the event of bus cancellations, etc. To add
your name to the notify list simply click here,
choose 'notify' and continue.
We
were pleased to welcome a number of parents for
our first Admin Parent Connection (APC). APC
is designed to keep parents up to speed when they
cannot attend Parent Council meetings. It will
typically be held on the Friday following Parent
Council.
Last
but not least, we would like to take this opportunity
to wish you and yours a season filled with beautiful
moments and cherished memories.

Parent
Council Update
Well you likely heard the kids' cheers from
the school gym when we were able to announce
that we had sufficient funds to purchase our
play structure. At our last Parent Council
meeting a large model was brought in for all
of us to see. It's huge and will replace
the 2 play structures nearest the school. Like
everything, the price has gone up and is slightly
above $100,000 cost for the structure and installation. We
are so lucky to have the support of all of you,
the Fall Classic Committee, sponsors, and our
city councilor Brenda Leipsic who has helped
us get some matching grants. If you see
her, please stop her and say a big 'Thank You'.
Throughout our fundraising efforts the school
staff has always been huge supporters, and again
they came through, by donating some walk-a-thon
and international student money in order to
get us over the last hump. They generously
donated $10,000. A big 'Thank You and Merci'.

Lunch
Program
The
lunch hour at Van Walleghem School continues to
be a busy time. With the colder weather
upon us, students in Grades 1 through 6 and many
of our Grade 7 and 8 students are enjoying the
outdoors, wishing that there was more snow! No
doubt that wish will come true very soon and the
very best winter playground will keep our students
happy!
For
those who are interested, Craft Club has started
for students in Grades 1 through 5. Thanks
to Shelley Fisher for organizing this activity
and to Tina Strong for helping Shelley.
When
not crafting, all students from grades 1 through
6 enjoy the opportunity for outdoor activity.
Our
senior students are given the privilege of spending
their entire lunch hour indoors, if they choose
to do so. While indoors, they are given
the option of signing up for computer time; playing
a seasonal sport in the gym; studying or doing
research in the library or hanging out and socializing
in the back hallway.
We
are still taking applications for part-time and
occasional adult supervisors. If you are
interested, contact Bev at bam007@shaw.ca
or through the school at 489-0995.
Hands
on Techno Trades
In
the Spring, Grade 5 students participated
in a session called 'Eyes on Techno/Trades'
at the Winnipeg Technical College. On
November 28th, Grade 6 students participated
in a second session called, 'Hands
on Techno/Trades'.
These
students will experience a half day at the Winnipeg
Technical College to explore a Technology or
Trade career option of their choice.
Among the choices are Auto Mechanics, Hairstyling,
Pharmacy Technician, Auto Painting, Electrical
Applications, Industrial Welding, Industrial
Mechanic, Internet Specialist, Culinary Arts,
and Motorsport Technician. What
a great opportunity!
