Council Update
Parent
Council next meets on Tuesday, February 17, 2009
at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. All parents
are invited to attend.
Did you know that Parent Council has a web page
on the Van Walleghem School website? The Parent
Council web page reflects the discussions that
have taken place at Parent Council Meetings, the
Constitution for Parent Council, as well as the
Minutes from previous meetings. The Parent Council
web page can be accessed by going to the Van Walleghem
School website and clicking on the heading “Parents”
and then clicking on the heading “Parent
Council”. Once on the Parent Council page,
you can register for “notify me”,
which would automatically notify you via e-mail
of any new entries on the Parent Council web page.
We look forward to seeing you on February 17th!

Message
This
beautiful sketch was sent with a number of other
art works as a gift to the students and families
of Van Walleghem for their generosity. Last February
we sent many boxes of school supplies to be distributed
by Canadian Forces personnel in Afghanistan. The
art works that we have received were done by students
who live in an orphanage in Afghanistan. We hope
to exchange art with the children and continue to
foster ties of friendship and education.
This month the class of 2013 (our
Grade 8s) began planning for high school and the
class of 2022
and their parents began planning for Kindergarten.
This week we will host all interested parents for
a Kindergarten Information evening (Thursday, Feb.
5 at 7:00 pm). Recently Grade 8s visited either
Oak Park (FI) or Shaftesbury (EI) for an orientation
to high school. They will complete the registration
later this month.
Last week our very own bands played to a very receptive
crowd at the Immanuel Pentecostal Church. This was
the first year that we had a Grade 8 band with 3
years of experience with their instruments. You
could hear the difference that extra year has made.
The Grade 8s will be participating in the Optimist
festival on Tuesday, February 17 (Stage 2/4) at
1:10 pm. Spectators are welcome.
We look forward to seeing parents and children participating
in tri-conferences next week. An invitation link
will be e-mailed to parents this week.

Brick
by Brick, Building
Hope is a Van Walleghem Student Voice initiative.
Our
goal is to raise $5000.00 in order to have a house
built for a homeless family in Uganda, Africa.
All Van Walleghem students and staff will be encouraged
to purchase a “brick” for the house at a cost of
$10.00. Donations will be collected in homerooms
between March 2 and 18, at which point students
will receive a certificate of appreciation.
An information letter, classroom presentations,
the house display and a school-wide assembly will
take place in late February. Stay tuned!
A huge thank you to the Parent council
that started off this student initiative action
project with a donation of $500.
