Administration Message

Sugar Plum Snowflake

One of the most wonderful things about the school year is that we have two chances to say "welcome back; we wish you a great year". We sincerely hope that 2008 brings you and yours a wonderful year complete with good health and true happiness. We have a number of new students who have joined us after the break and would like to take this opportunity to welcome them to the Van Walleghem community.

The floor finishing "elves" were busy over the break; please stop by the gym when next you have a chance. Surely, you will be as delighted as we are with the refinished gym floor and freshly painted walls.

We are very proud of our students for donating generously to the Mitten Tree, Koats for Kids and holiday hampers. Next month, students will have a chance to shine at 5 Star conferences. Conferences will be held on February 20 (4:30-7:30) and on the morning of February 21. We will be e-mailing registration forms to complete online as we did for October conferences. As you may remember, 5 Star Conferences give students a chance to show various samples of their learning while also setting goals. Conferences are held in homerooms and there will be up to three conferences running simultaneously.

We had a number of parents attend our first APC (Admin Parent Connection). The APC will be held following the monthly Parent Council meeting. Our next Parent Council Meeting is on January 15 (7:00 pm in the library) and APC will be on January 16 (1:05 pm in the Conference Room). We hope to see you at Parent Council or APC or both!

Last but not least, welcome back to Mme Beauregard who has returned as a member of the Student Support Team.

As always, we invite you to contact us if ever you have a matter to discuss.

Sincerely,

Brad Burns & Cintra Ragoonanan

Your Admin Team

Happy New Year and welcome to 2008! We hope everyone had a terrific holiday and that you are prepared for an exciting New Year full of fun and fitness. Our grade 3 and 4 students were supplied with "Healthy Living Challenge" Calendars for 2008 just before the holiday break. Hopefully families of these students will be keeping track of their activities and sharing in some fun-filled, outdoor Manitoba winter recreation together.

This is our final newsletter for participants in the Count Me In study. Last spring, over 300 children from schools in Ottawa, Peterborough and Winnipeg participated in our project and completed a variety of math-related activities.  This newsletter highlights some of our study findings for parents and educators.

We are very appreciative

of the efforts of all the teachers, parents, principals, and especially the children, who helped us with this study. Thank you to everyone!

Lunch Program

Apple tart lunch box

Students who are registered in the lunch program on a full-time basis or for the winter program need to bring a note should they be leaving during the lunch hour. Attendance is taken each lunch hour to ensure all students are accounted for. Having a note to explain a lunch hour absence helps us to know that your child is safe.

Fall Classic

in the long run...

Happy New Year to Everyone.

We hope you had a great holiday season. With the nice weather we have been having lately, it's really tempting to get outside
and go for a run. Just be careful of the ice on the sidewalks. Roads can be just as icy, and then there's that pesky issue of cars!

Treadmills can be pretty dull to run on. So, pull out that 14 inch TV you've had since your student days, hook up the old VCR (hopefully not a Beta) and watch that ancient tape of Flashdance once more while you run!

If you're interested in any upcoming running events, click on the link to the Manitoba Runners Association web site
www.mraweb.ca. There are lots coming up, even in the winter months! And, speaking of events, we are always looking for people to get involved with organizing the LWFC. If you are interested in joining us, or maybe sponsoring the event, drop us a line at 489-6296 or email us at fallclassic@mts.net
