Music
News
BRAVO
and CONGRATULATIONS to the Grade 4/5/6 students
who presented this year's musical production on
the evening of May 27th. In "HAPPILY EVER
AFTER", the singers, dancers, cast and characters
gave an entertaining and comical performance as
the King, Queen, and Prince searched for a "true"
princess. In the end, Snow White and "The
Dudes" won the day, the Villagers no longer had
to worry about the dragon, and they all celebrated
having found a "true" princess after all!
The cast played to a wonderful audience of parents,
grandparents, friends and relatives who showed their
appreciation by giving the students a standing ovation!
As always, the Grade 4/5/6 musical production members
were helpful, creative, and fun to work with in
preparing and presenting "HAPPILY EVER AFTER"!
The
Grade 4 & 5 students traveled to the Centennial
Concert Hall on May 16th to see and hear the Winnipeg
Symphony Orchestra perform. They presented
an educational and very entertaining concert entitled
"Music In Motion". Through an interesting
variety of music and dance, the WSO illustrated
how music influences dance, art and drama, and how
dance, art and drama influence styles of music.
Our VW students were GREAT LISTENERS and conducted
themselves as a mature and appreciative audience.
Fall
Classic
Salut
tout le monde. Hi everyone.
Plans for the 2008 Fall Classic are progressing
well. As usual, we are always looking for people
interested in volunteering to help out on the day
of the event in lots of different capacities. We're
also looking to our community for generous Sponsors
to help fund our Site Development projects as well
as Sponsors for prizes and operational support.
If you or your organization can help us out, we
would love to hear from you (Mark, 489-6296 or fallclassic@mts.net).
I would like to take a moment to recognize one of
our Fall Classic Running Club (FCRC) members who
did an awesome job a few weeks ago in the Winnipeg
Police Services Half Marathon. Sandra Lock, who
runs on Mondays with the group, participated her
first half marathon with a former FCRC member, Rhonda
Chorney. They completed the course in just a little
over 2 hours. Sandra ran her first 10 k at the 2007
Linden Woods Fall Classic and caught the "I
can do more" bug. Congratulations to Sandra
and Rhonda for a great showing in the Policemen's
Half Marathon!
Summer
Dress Code
The
wonderful spring and summer-like weather, although
most welcome, brings with it the challenges of determining
appropriate dress for a K-8 school setting. School
dress reflects the importance of the daily education
environment and is a statement of mutual respect
for one another.
Unacceptable
clothing for École Van Walleghem School includes—but
is not limited to—garments that expose bare backs,
shoulders, or midriffs; very short skirts and shorts;
exposed undergarments; and clothing with offensive
wording and drawings. As with the rest of the year,
children must remove their hats in instructional
spaces. The school staff reserves the right to use
discretion regarding dress they consider inappropriate
for school. In such cases, staff members will contact
parents and send students home to change their clothing

Message
June
is bustling with field trips, activities, exams
and the natural conclusion of the school year.
Van Walleghem students and staff have a wonderful
month planned. We are most excited about the
volunteer tea coming up on Thursday, June 19.
A very dedicated committee has been working on making
this celebration an extraordinary one. Many
school events and projects could not happen without
the support of volunteers and we are looking forward
to showing our gratitude for your time and energy.
Would
you believe that we have one volunteer who is only
10 months old? That's right! Baby Maya has
been volunteering all year; she is our Roots of
Empathy baby and Mrs. Hughes' class has thoroughly
enjoyed watching her grow. Thank you to Maya's
parents for allowing us to share in the excitement
of her development.
Action!
Three creative grade 7 girls (Leah, Joey and Meara)
were behind a fundraiser designed to raise relief
funds for China and Burma. Thank you, girls,
for inspiring us to help others.
Happily
Ever Audience . . . it was a pleasure to see so
many families here for the musical last week.
Mme Salay along with many helpers orchestrated yet
another amazing production. Every student
involved did a fabulous job. We would like
to express our sincere gratitude to Theo in Grade
8. Theo works tirelessly as tech support during
our school productions and we truly appreciate his
efforts.
We
have a very special “curtain call” to announce this
month. Mme Salay will be retiring at the end
of June. As a music teacher, Mme Salay's
career has been full of high notes. She has
donated countless hours to school-based and divisional
productions and will be dearly missed. Please
join us in wishing her a joyful retirement.
Happy
June!

Are
you looking for interesting and stimulating activities
to occupy your children during summer vacation?
Would you like them to benefit from a program that
will maintain and develop their reading skills?
How about a fun-filled environment where your children
can participate and meet new friends?
Then mark your calendars, so you can register your
children this summer for the TD Summer Reading Club
at the Fort Garry Library. Registration for this
free program begins June 23rd, and runs through
summer until we wrap it up August 15th. This year’s
fun-filled theme is LOL [Laugh Out Loud].
As soon as your children are registered, they will
receive a free reading kit illustrated by a well-known
children's book artist. The reading kit contains
one awesome poster, nine stickers, and a bilingual
activity booklet that is chock-full of games and
includes a log sheet for recording the books they
have read. School-aged kids track the library titles
they read, enter draws & can register for special
weekly themed programs, but those have limited space.
Preschoolers also receive a kit with a selection
of age-appropriate activities, and earn stamps and
prize entry forms based on the library books they
read with their family.
Thursday evenings in July, reluctant readers are
encouraged to register for RAP [Read Aloud Program].
School aged children participate in activities &
games to improve their literacy and are paired with
teen volunteers to practice reading aloud.
For
further information about this, or other children’s
programs, call 986-4919 or visit the branch, at
1360 Pembina Highway.

Did
You Know.......
Avoid Ear Bud headphones as they generate more direct
sound into the ear than headsets and can cause greater
damage if the volume is too loud. If the level is
loud it is only safe to listen for less than 2 minutes.
Soft
Air Guns - Toys?
Soft
Air Guns are guns that shoot plastic pellets.
By the virtue of the fact that they are widely available
and are sold in the toy or sporting goods department,
they are mistakenly considered as toys. Please be
advised that Soft Air Guns are not to be used without
proper eye protection and are considered a weapon
by Pembina Trails School Division. We are
aware that some of our students own a soft air gun.
Please take the time to discuss your child's safety
if they have a soft air gun or may play with someone
who has one.
Marathon
Club
We
have had a really successful Marathon Club with
a record number of students participating! A special
'Thanks" goes out to our muffin run coordinators,
and to all of the parents who came and supported
their children's running and walking goals.
There will be a pizza lunch for regular Marathon
participants on Wednesday, June 4th, Our last running
day will be on Wednesday, June 11th.
Good luck to all Manitoba Marathon runners. We will
be thinking of you on Father's Day!
Our final Marathon Club activity will be a pancake
breakfast which will be held on Thursday, June 19th,
at 8a.m. in the Community room. More information
will be handed out at one of our regular practices.

Words
As
our spring skipping clubs wrap up here at Van Walleghem
School, we must send bouquets of thanks to all of
the teachers that helped to supervise our Skipping
Clubs over the past few months. Without them, our
active skippers would not have had the chance to
improve their jumping skills and fitness levels.
Thanks to our volunteers, Mrs. Bridgeman, Mrs. Eden,
Mrs. Fraser, Mrs. Stewart, Mme Deeley, Mme Kovach,
Mme Perreaux, Mme Lacasse, Mrs. Hughes, and Mrs.
Craddock. Our Grade 4 assistants who helped with
the grade 1-3 skipping club are also greatly appreciated:
Rose, Mallory, Paulina, Julianna & Haley.
