Roots
of Empathy
We
will again be running the powerful Roots of Empathy
program in one of our Middle Years classrooms
this year. However, we have an urgent need
for a baby! If anyone knows of a parent
and baby (newborn up to 3 months old by the end
of November) who would be willing to participate
in this program, please contact the school immediately.
For
more detailed information about Roots of Empathy,
please visit www.rootsofempathy.org
or contact
Ms. C. McNabb Davis at school.

Summer
has come and gone and here we are ready to start
another exciting year in the gym at Van Walleghem
School.
Welcome
back everyone.
While
we were on holidays some of our students were
very busy competing in the Manitoba Summer Games
in Carman. Congratulations to Shane (1st in 800m
and 1500m) Aidan (2nd in High Jump, 3rd in Long
Jump) and Braedan who combined with Shane and
Aidan to win the 4x100 relay.
Just
a reminder to everyone about the expectations
in the gym at Van Walleghem. Everyone should have
a change of clothes, which includes a T-shirt,
shorts and running shoes. Running shoes come in
many different forms; basketball shoes, volleyball
shoes, cross-trainers, jogging shoes. These are
all acceptable types of footwear. Skateboard type
shoes are not allowed in the gym at Van Walleghem.

Shoot
for the moon, even if you miss you’ll be among
the stars. We are looking forward to another 5 Star
year at École Van Walleghem School.
We had the pleasure of welcoming 552 students who
will be supported by our outstanding staff. This
is up 7 students from last year. We would like to
offer a special welcome to our new staff members,
including Mme Chuckry, our new Vice Principal.
There was an upbeat and inviting mood in the air
at our Parent Information evening as parents and
teachers began their partnership. All of our homerooms
have a webpage so you can stay informed. You will
find a link to Class Web Pages on the VW homepage
(www.pembinatrails.ca/vw).
The official bell was rung (see photo) by Dhruv,
representing our youngest students, and Devon, representing
the graduating class of 2008. This is a Russian
tradition that has found a home at VW since 2004.
Please
accept our invitation to join the Parent Council!
Parent Council meets monthly and is responsible
for many important initiatives including playground
enhancement, social events for families and fundraising.
The first meeting is on September 23 at 7:00 pm
in the school library. Plans are in the works to
celebrate the opening of our new play structure;
a wonderful play structure that symbolizes what
we can do when we work together as a community.
It is our pleasure to work in such a fine community
and we are looking forward to a great year.

Lunch
Program
The
lunch program is up and running for another year!
The
Van Walleghem School Lunch Program is run by the
Parent Council in cooperation with the school
administration. Our goal is to ensure all
students who stay at school for lunch have a safe
and pleasant lunch hour. We do this by coordinating
supervisors to watch the students while they eat
their lunch and during their outdoor recess time.
Every day, 17 adult lunch supervisors, 14 student
lunch monitors and 1 lunch coordinator provide
supervision for our students.
At
Van Walleghem School all students are required
to register in the lunch program indicating whether
they will be staying during the lunch hour on
a daily basis, OR staying for the lunch hour for
the winter months only (November through March),
OR staying at the school for lunch on an occasional
basis only. If you have not registered in
the lunch program, please down load the registration
form from lunch
form and
send it with payment to the school by September
30th.
All
registration fees collected are used to pay the
lunch program staff. Tax receipts are issued
for lunch program registration fees.
