"Rock Star" RRC Alum Honoured by PMI Manitoba

Red River College alum Scott Hinkson has been honoured by RRC and PMI Manitoba, having received a $1,000 student achievement award at the organization's annual conference earlier this month.

Hinkson, who earned his Project Management certificate last November through RRC's School of Continuing and Distance Education, works as a project manager for the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. But he's also known in certain local circles as an acclaimed singer and songwriter.

"Every year, we ask all of the Project Management instructors to nominate a student for this award based on a combination of academics and attitude," says Kirk Johnson, RRC's Program Manager, I.T. and Professional Studies. "This year, the clear winner was more than just a good student -- he's actually an all-out rock star!"

Hinkson (shown above, at far right) now has two RRC credentials under his belt, having completed the College's Business Analyst program in 2010. Johnson says he made such an impression on his instructors, they quickly recommended he join the program's advisory board -- first as a student, and later, as a permanent member.

"(In the last year), on top of being a new father, Scott has somehow found the energy to successfully complete the PMP (Project Management Professional) exam, finish the Project Management program, and begin teaching in RRC's Business Analyst program -- all of this while holding down a fulltime Project Management job and releasing a fantastic new album," says Johnson. "I've always said if you want something done, give it to a busy person -- and Scott proves my point!"

Photography Instructor Launches New "Airborne" Exhibit

Rodney S. Braun, a Professional Photography instructor with RRC's School of Continuing and Distance Education, has launched a new exhibit that's partially inspired by Newton's laws of motions.

From Braun's website: "Take a 10-kg bag of flour, some willing subjects, and an out-of-the-box photographer, and you get some extraordinary images and a lot of mess -- a great study of the impact every motion has on the air around us."

The exhibit, called Airborne, runs until May 5, 2012, at Pixels 2.1 Gallery, located at 217 McDermot Ave, and open 11am- 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Just days before the exhibit opened, Braun learned he'd won two awards (Best Portrait and Best Commercial Image) from the Professional Photographers of Canada. See Braun's website for more information.

Graduate Satisfaction & Employment Survey

In January 2012, RRC's Research and Planning Department sent a Graduate Satisfaction & Employment Survey to those who'd graduated during the previous academic year. A second mail-out occurred in February; along with the questionnaire, grads received an entry form for a chance to win one of seven Best Buy gift cards (denominations of $50 to $200).

An external agency is following up by phone with those grads who have yet to respond. Information gathered will be compiled into RRC's annual Graduate Satisfaction & Employment Report, with results broken down by program and school. Click here to view past reports, or to learn more about how survey results are reported.
