1. Epiphany Devotional Series: Living Our Faith

Many of us would love to spend more time in spiritual practice than we do, but often find it hard to make space for it in the day-to-day challenges of our lives. As the hectic holiday season subsides, a new year can offer us a chance to make changes and deepen our commitment to what matters most.

In the spirit of our seasonal devotional projects, a special collaboration between ELCIC National Bishop Susan C. Johnson and Lutherans Connect journeys through January and the first weeks of the season of Epiphany. As always, we will combine scripture with prayer, images, reflection and music.

2. ELCIC Congregations: Property Insurance

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) National Office would like to inform all ELCIC congregations that have their 2019 property insurance renewing within the ELCIC that the AON program will be receiving approximately 7.5% of those premiums back due to low claims during 2017-2018. Your AON service office should be contacting you soon to gather updated information for the March 31, 2019 renewal cycle. Take care to ensure that property values insured are adequate to avoid penalties for under insurance (co-insurance) in the event of a claim. As always, note that vacant properties should be reported to your AON service office within 120 days of change of occupancy in order to avoid gaps in coverage. Should you have any questions, please send an email to Kyle Giesbrecht, Director for Finance and Administration at kgiesbrecht@elcic.ca .

3. Information on Best Email Practices

Sending and receiving emails remains our primary way of communicating within the ELCIC. Not so long ago, ELCIC email addresses were being "spoofed" or impersonated by individuals with far too much time in their hands. As a result, recipients become confused and sometimes erroneously open up these emails with adverse results. Please be reassured that the ELCIC National Office is monitoring and adjusting our settings for both inbound and outbound emails. To help safeguard our emails, please click here for some email best practices.

4. Canada Lutheran Magazine Seeking In Mission Nominees

Every congregation has special people who use their energy, talent and leadership in ways that make them role models. That's the kind of person whose ideas Canada Lutheran wants to share in our In Mission column. Please take time to let us know about such people and why you think we should interview them. Get in touch with us at editor@elcic.ca .

KAIROS Updates:

Urge Canada to Support Women Peacebuilders

Right now, the Canadian government is preparing the 2019/2020 budget. Let's ensure that women peace builders in the Global South receive the development assistance they need to lay the groundwork for resilient peace in some of the world's most protracted conflict zones.

Please send a message to your Member of Parliament now asking for an increase in international assistance and funding to women peace builders. It will take only a minute. Please click here.

Light of a Star: New KAIROS Epiphany Worship Resource

The Wise Ones found Jesus, the Light of the World, by following the light of a star. The journey of the Wise Ones and the machinations of a despot king make us think of those who are on the move because of injustice, seeking shelter, seeking work, seeking a better life. Migrant workers are ever hopeful when they land on Canadian soil. Can we nurture communities that embrace these seekers? To access this resource, please click here.

MLUC Updates

Deadline: Holy Land Study Tour Registration

February 27 is the deadline to register for Martin Luther University College's Holy Land Study Tour. The program, from April 22-May 7, includes visits to sites in Jerusalem, Galilee and occupied territories. Meet teachers and students at Lutheran schools; Rabbis for Human Rights, and the Wi'am Human Rights Centre; CLWR development workers; and worship with Palestinian Christian, and Jewish congregations. The tour is designed for study, rather than tourism. Prospective travellers must be registered in a degree program (credit can be transferred to the home institution through a Letter of Permission) or you can join the tour as a continuing education student. In order to keep the cost of this program as affordable as possible, participants must travel to Israel as a group. Click here to view the flyer. MLUC: Year in Review 2018

In Photo: Rev. Dr. Mark Harris addresses people gathered

for the blessing and donor appreciation event at Luther in October 2018.

Last year was truly historic in the life of our institution. The school's name changed from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary to Martin Luther University College, and a new logo was created and launched. We co-ordinated a major overhaul of the school and ran a successful capital campaign to help pay for the renewal. While wrestling with all of those tasks - and still running the school as per usual - we marked a series of firsts and lasts: We graduated the last class of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary and the first class of Martin Luther University College. We welcomed new faculty and staff, as familiar faces departed. And we vacated temporary offices as we settled into our renewed building, and welcomed visitors for special events throughout the fall term. To commemorate the year, we compiled dozens of images into an album on Facebook and an album on Flickr. We hope you enjoy reminiscing as much as we do. Check out LutherWaterloo's events and programs at luther.wlu.ca.
