Festival du Voyageur

Winter in Winnipeg may be cold, but we still know how to party! Every February, Winnipeg hosts Canada 's largest winter festival - The Festival du Voyageur (http://www.festivalvoyageur.mb.ca/)! This unique ten-day celebration (February 9-18), themed on the fur trade era, is held in St. Boniface, Winnipeg 's French Quarter. It celebrates the "joie de vivre" of the fur traders. It's a place of sights, ceremony and celebration - a reflection of Canada 's unique French-Canadian heritage and a showcase of historic and cultural treasures.

Visit to Taiwan

Keira will be visiting Taiwan from March 2-7, 2007 to represent Heartland International English School at the Oh!Canada Education trade show. She would love to see former students while she is there! Please feel free to visit her at the fairs, or contact her by email her at Keira@heartlandenglish.com .

Be Our Valentine

February 14th is Valentine's Day. This is a Western holiday that celebrates your love for the people around you. We often celebrate Valentine's Day by giving little gifts to our boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, or wives. It's also common for children to pass Valentine's Day cards to their friends. Do you celebrate Valentine's Day, or have a similar holiday in your countries? Heartland teachers and staff want to wish you and your loved ones a very happy Valentine's Day!

Indefinite Nouns & Articles

Common nouns are nouns that say the name of one or more members of a large class of things: student; beach; ice cream.

Proper nouns name a specific person, place, or thing: Masaru; Grand Beach; Haagen-Daaz.

Common nouns can be indefinite or definite. We use an indefinite article before singular indefinite nouns: a/an (a soccer ball). We don't use an article before plural indefinite nouns, whether countable or uncountable: Ø mountain bikes; Ø bottled water. If the noun begins with a vowel sound, we use "an": an alligator; an owl. However, we use "a" with a noun beginning with the sound "y" as in "yellow": a unit; a utensil; a universe.

Look at these indefinite nouns and choose the correct indefinite article: a / an / Ø

  1. Japanese Fans
  2. Miso soup
  3. Banana
  4. Unit
  5. Underwater camera
  6. Armadillo
  7. Ghosts

Answers: Ø / Ø/ a / a / an / an / Ø
