The Time is Now!

Kitchener-Waterloo Baling Days Nearly Upon Us

The Faith Lutheran Church Sewing Group in Brantford has pledged an astounding 300+ blankets and 65 We Care kits (photo courtesy of Liz Mongeon). Click here to read more about the good work being done by the Faith Lutheran group as covered by their local paper.

August 20th & 21stthe inaugural KW-Baling Days event will kick-off at the Mennonite Central Committee warehouse in Kitchener. We Care kits, quilts and other supplies will be sorted, packed and loaded on their way to the Lutheran World Federation project in Mauritania. This promises to be an exciting project and a great opportunity for congregations to become more involved with the We Care initiative in a very hands-on way.

The number of churches that have pledged support is very encouraging, but a quick glance at our donation target reveals that more needs to be done to fill the container. It is not too late for churches and individuals to offer their support by creating some We Care Kits. Donations can be delivered to the MCC facility (61 Kent Ave. in Kitchener) from August 6th through 21st, during regular business hours. In addition to kits and quilts our friends in Mauritania are also interested in receiving donated clothing, which should be appropriate for hot weather and laundered prior to donation.

To ensure a full container, CLWR will be shipping several pallets of quilts from Winnipeg thanks to Arnold Bros. Transport that is offering this service free of charge.

Inspiration and Dedication

Deaconess Milagros Martinez addresses the LWML assembly (photo courtesy LWML-C).

July 5th to 8th, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League–Canada (LWML) gathered for their 8th national convention in Kelowna, BC. We Care Program Coordinator Patrick Stewart was there representing CLWR, “It was really great to meet so many inspiring and dedicated women, and to learn more about the compassionate work the LWML does in Canada and around the world. It was especially nice to meet in person so many supporters of the We Care program who have been in email contact for years.” The LWML is a true cornerstone of the We Care program, organizing and rallying support for our international shipments.

On Saturday, Deaconess Milagros Martinez addressed an enraptured assembly, speaking on the diverse and important work of the Iglesia Sinodo de Nicaragua and the Lutheran Church–Canada sponsored mission at Chinandega. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear first-hand of the challenges and successes of the mission. The 2012 BC Baling Days shipment should be arriving any day now, and we hope to make many more shipments to Nicaragua in the years to come.

Finally, congratulations to our good friend Iris Barta who was elected the new president of the LWML, and a huge thanks to outgoing president Judy Grande and her team that organized a great convention.
